Anyone else want to scream 😱 about prices

Anyone else feel like screaming 😱. The smart meter is now the enemy. I'm constantly topping up the meter. Yes it's prepayment they won't change it I've tried and tried. The budget just keeps getting tighter. It's hard to find cheap food no offers things constantly out of stock. You need a bank loan for just to buy toliet roll 🙄 I don't have the heating on constantly I try to just heat one room with a heater. Radiators are barely on an hour here and there to keep away damp. Dryer needs to be used in in emergency since the house is colder so clothes aren't drying properly. I use an airer and it's constantly raining and windy to use the washing line. Food budget is through the roof food is smaller and more expensive and always out of stock honestly what a joke.

I agree, I think many people will change their shopping habits for good, I know I have. 🤔
Some of these brands are becoming greedy and it's time for consumers to call them out and vote with their feet.

Absolutely, I know I have! Sadly though, I think the supermarkets will be the ones who win all round in the end, especially as people start swapping to their own brands of stuff.

I've made loads of changes. Cancelled fresh veg box, now all frozen foods. Entertainment I didn't think twice about is now considered treats! Getting reduced meats and freezing them.

It's the contact lenses that are costing a lot, but I can't get by without them.

My aunt who I stayed with recently makes her own curries etc and freezes them.

but she also buys a lot of frozen food too.

she used to do the catering for a golf club so is used to batch cooking and freezing!

I nearly fell over in co-op earlier when 1 large kitchen towel roll is now £4.70, 😮

FaceLikeASmackedArse · 04/11/2022 00:11

I did an out-loud "how much?!" in Asda yesterday when I picked up a plain black very basic tshirt. Absolutely nothing fancy, no embellishments, not made of with any luxury fabric, just one run-of-the-mill plain standard tshirt.... £10

You know, the type that used to be about 4 quid or two for 7 quid. Now it's a tenner for just one!

I was looking at it all over trying to work out what was so special about it that it warranted a 10 quid price tag, but couldn't work it out. If that's how much the most basic clothing is now going to cost, we're all going to be walking about with holey clothes as well as being cold and hungry

Doing my online asda order earlier, butter was £2.15! I remember being upset when it went over £1 many years ago. But I swear it was under £1.50 a year ago.

For ages there has been a deal in Asda for two packs of their grated cheese which cost £3.00 (250g packs originally which then went to 200g). Looked online yesterday and the deal now costs £4.50!

My mum uses sainsburys or Tesco’s kitchen towel and whenever I visit I say she’s mad to buy it! She has cloth napkins too why not wash those?

GUARDIAN1 · 04/11/2022 00:40

YANBU

The way prices of basic groceries have risen - and continue to rise - is scary. I'm a meat eater but have only ever had it a couple of times a week. Can't afford that now. I'm lucky in that I lived in a vegetarian household for several years, so learned lots of meat free recipes. It's still to eat well on a budget, but more time consuming as any 'convenience' foods are too expensive as well. Cooking from scratch also means more energy use. I'm relying on my air fryer, slow cooker and microwave much more than I used to, to try and minimise fuel costs.

I use both. I have a drawer full of cloths but sometimes a paper towel is the only thing to deal with vomit, poop, unidentified thing/fluid on the floor, unclogging the sink.

it’s infinitely better than tissue that breaks up when dealing with child related cuts and grazes. Wet paper towel works magic 🤣

I use less than a roll a month though so the expensive spread out isn’t that much

mycatisannoying · 04/11/2022 06:51

I am a Poundland frequenter but there's loads of things in there now costing more than £1.

sweetmelody · 04/11/2022 07:13

I shop in Aldi but I get Branston Baked Beans from one of the others. Prefer the sauce to Heinz. Will try Aldi’s own this weekend

sweetmelody · 04/11/2022 07:14

BMW6 · 02/11/2022 19:27

I prefer Aldi baked beans and their soups, and far far cheaper.

Meant to quote you in the last message!

fernz · 04/11/2022 07:20

Hellmans mayonnaise was £2.65 yesterday. Had to look up my old online shopping receipts in emails and it was £1.50 for the exact same size bottle at the end of 2020.

Birdy8 · 04/11/2022 07:28

I agree a bowl of warm water and using cotton wool is what I used, much more economical for when you’re at home. Savers or B&M will be cheaper for wipes if you have a local one.

Redty10 · 04/11/2022 07:31

Emmamoo89 · 02/11/2022 18:46

It's getting ridiculous. Baby wipes gone up 50p now £7.50 pack of 12

It was good old fashioned cotton wool and water or baby lotion when mine were babies. No such thing as baby wipes then 🤣

Oil prices were massively hit by the uka rus war.
That's why stuff like fish and chips went ul massively too.

DarkKarmaIlama · 04/11/2022 07:53

@RagzRebooted

hard water here too. It does need to be the aldi gold not red. Hope you like it.

buckeejit · 04/11/2022 08:02

One thing that helps me is we have a chicken factory nearby with a small shop. They sell short dated things really cheap. I can get e.g 3 Waitrose chickens for £5, where they'd be £6.90 each in Waitrose. Or M&S hunters chicken for £1 a pack instead of £6 odd each. Depends what they have but worth checking if there's anything similar nearby

Mrshockallz1726 · 04/11/2022 08:02

It's even worse if you have a free from diet. My son is allergic to dairy soya and wheat. His one and only safe pizza is now £4.10!

bellabasset · 04/11/2022 08:17

@Mrshockallz1726 My friend started making pizza bases from scratch during covid and has continued to do so. M&S do have a good range of flour and gluten free products.

Sassysyl · 04/11/2022 08:23

Seriously cheese in a pot is £1.25 in Farmfoods if there is one near to u.

CurzonDax · 04/11/2022 08:24

We did our ASDA online order on Wednesday to be delivered later today. Needed to add a couple things to the order yesterday, so went online to amend it. Got a notification to inform me thatbthe prices of a couple of our items had increased. Asda own brand thai red xurry paste went from £1.25 to £1.60 - literally overnight from Wednesday to Thursday.

crossstitchingnana · 04/11/2022 08:29

My bus fares have gone up 20% this year.

Also, ordered two boxes of Lindor for Xmas. Thought they were the big ones as they were £4 ON OFFER. But, no 200g. You would have got the big boxes for that last year.

Omg never put boiling water in a hot water bottle! Really dangerous!

Is that not what they are made for?
not being sarcastic I’m genuinely asking, I always fill my hot water bottles with boiling water (have been for 20+ years) is that not right???

Some people don't pour it carefully and burn themselves when air bubbles burst. You know what I mean? Not the best explanation 😂

IntrovertedPenguin · 04/11/2022 09:14

I bulk buy online now. Toilet rolls are always cheaper. Fair enough not Andrex quality but they do the job not prison toilet paper either and can't grumble at 24 rolls for £5 including delivery.

It's so depressing how much things have shot up, my son only eats one brand of pasta the very cheap penne pasta a bag used to be 25 pence, now 52 pence. It all adds up. Sad
And even if you shop around, the petrol increases kinda make it pointless!
