Starbucks don't take cash

CoastalWave · 02/11/2022 09:48

AIBU to think this is ridiculous?

Took DS yesterday for a treat after school with his birthday money. We only spent £8 but as he handed over his £10 we were told, sorry we don't take cash anymore, card payments only.

Is this just the start of the slippery slope down to a cashless society ?

Really annoyed me!

My DD went in to town for her birthday and she counted out her coins in Starbucks, which they watched her do and when she’d finished they said ‘We don’t take cash’. Arseholes

As each business make their own choices, and so can each customer, and I will choose to boycott those companies that will not accept cash as payment, and I won't be alone in that.

No, you won’t be alone. But you’ll be in such an extremely small minority that it won’t make a jot of difference.

The only people who need worry about the government tracking their transactions are criminals. If they wanted to sanction or control people's spending they'd just go straight for your bank account. How are you going to get your cash out then?

Seriously the paranoia of some is laughable. Sooner cash is a thing of the past the better.

Why "the sooner cash is a thing of the past the better" though?

When systems go down, as they sometimes do, nobody can purchase anything at all - not even a loaf of bread or bottle of milk - without cash.

Haven't you read the comments about vulnerable people being the most negatively impacted by places not taking cash? Or do you either not care or think that the most vulnerable are acceptable collateral damage to get rid of cash?

you keep saying that, but. I suspect as more people are being bought up without using cash, it will be vulnerable who will be the ones who cant adapt to cash!

And I won't be alone in using ones that don't have people faffing about rooting in their purses for the right change.

Exactly this. The businesses concerned will have made an informed business decision, in the same way they decide on staffing levels, product range, opening hours, etc., and will have decided the loss in trade is worth the savings they're likely to make. It certainly won't have been a knee-jerk reaction without thinking through the consequences. They'll know the breakdown of sales between cash and card, know the margins of each, probably even know the type of sale more likely to be made by cash or card. With modern point of sale tills, you can do all kinds of analysis and reporting.

I've worked with adults with learning disabilities who are simply incapable of abstract thought; wonderful humans though they can be in other ways.

The individuals I'm thinking of need to see concrete physical objects (notes and coins) to represent money, otherwise they simply cannot abstractly conceptualise whether they can afford a specific purchase. I already know of one individual who has simply given up buying anything on his own and cannot be persuaded to try any more - he's lost a bit of the tiny amount of autonomy he had.

TheHouseElf · 04/11/2022 22:54

And people never faff about getting their cards out of their purses/wallets I suppose. There's never any problems at all paying by card or phone. Sure, its only people paying cash that cause such a massively long delay of oh, what would it be now, a matter of a few seconds. Get over yourself.

TheHouseElf · 04/11/2022 23:00

No problem being in a minority if it comes to it and will actively support and use those business who give customers the options we have all been able to access, and avoid and boycott those who don't. Choice is a wonderful thing.

EXSW · 05/11/2022 00:13

I wouldn't be so quick to think that. I've noticed that in my city at least, there is a significant ethnic minority population who mostly pay in cash.

Like someone else said - why are some people so against choice?? It's a strange agenda to push, especially when vulnerable people can be collateral damage.

Also, I worked in retail up until recently, and by far the biggest 'faffers' and wasters of time were those getting to the till and having to fiddle about with a phone transferring money before paying. Vast majority of your so called 'benefits' of cashless are quite frankly, bullshit.

Nope cards are on my phone, that's loyalty cards and payment cards. Just flick between the two.

Easy

RedRiverShore2 · 05/11/2022 04:53

I have paid by card, Phone and Apple Watch, I have several different credit cards for different shops as collect reward points, card is quickest, with phone it takes longer to check which card I am paying with, Watch has to have the correct card on it as only one shows, so one would have to faff at till, the card is the quickest as they are ready in my purse, cash would be also quick if it was a note.

If I know I am going to M&S I could be ready with M&S card on Watch but I would still have to use Sparks card from Phone or purse

When we paid at parking meter, a fiver seemed to be the quickest way to pay for £5 ticket on leaving.

I just use Apple wallet with cards in it. You clearly can't always pay with a note, that just wouldn't work.

I also love the money rounding on my Monzo account, feels like money for nothing.

RedRiverShore2 · 05/11/2022 06:34

Apple wallet is definitely slower than purse for seeing which card is which, maybe not helped by the amount of useless apps cluttering up the phone interface nowadays, in fact I find smart phones a bit of a pita anyway and mine is a fairly new one. I dread the day everything goes on the phone

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/11/2022 06:42

yanbu
i went to a large city with dd recently, i had cash, yet i could not spend it, everywhere was card only

You must be using it wrong? Mine is press the side button on my phone, Face ID and straight into the wallet? I don't have to open the phone, nor see any other apps.

Maybe try googling how you do it?

Saves lots of time, also don't need to queue at bank or atm, nor ever pay to withdraw money.

Yes mine is the same iPhone 11 with the Face ID, I probably need a newer phone, that might be better, I haven't used it for ages now as the watch is easier if I know beforehand which card I need, I think they are designed for people who only have about two cards, I have eight cards, I use them all and that makes it more awkward, you can put up to ten on there so obviously it is meant for multiple cards. They are just easier to see in my purse. I did look at how you do it but probably a couple of years ago now, I will look again. I never go to the cash machine though DH has the cash and I just take his if I need it

Conkersareback · 05/11/2022 14:36

@RedRiverShore2 I've got 11 on mine.

I disagree - financial services companies can get on the latest bandwagon and freeze the accounts of people whose views they don't like. See this about www.msn.com/en-gb/money/other/paypal-reinstates-free-speech-union-accounts-after-being-accused-of-e2-80-98politically-motivated-e2-80-99-ban/ar-AA12jPbHpaypal

Would you want your accounts frozen because you tweeted that you supported JKR for example? Or because you didn't?

I've not noticed that but my DH is constantly moaning about the people who have their rail tickets on their phones and they "never" work to open the barriers. That said, I can be at the station, buy a ticket at a machine, walk to the barriers and they won't open for me!

I think we are heading towards a cashless society in our life times.

I hope not. My dad has Parkinson's and can no longer enter PIN numbers. He wants to use cash as he feels more independent then.
I started a thread about Tesco tills a while and got hammered about wanting to use cash. Now the card only tills are empty and pay with cash tills have long queues. People want to use cash to budget. The cashier said she is dreading Xmas poor woman.

you dont need pin numbers under certain limits. would have thought using a card would be easier than handling cash

I hate people using electronic tickets at the theatre. Always seems to take much longer than paper tickets when they get to the ushers.

That is so sad.
People should have the choice.
