Starbucks don't take cash

AIBU to think this is ridiculous?

Took DS yesterday for a treat after school with his birthday money. We only spent £8 but as he handed over his £10 we were told, sorry we don't take cash anymore, card payments only.

Is this just the start of the slippery slope down to a cashless society ?

Really annoyed me!

Why did you deliberately stop your children learning how to use money and bank?

Bit rude. They did paper rounds and were paid in cash - quite standard IME. They were well able to use money thanks.

I honestly do not give a crap if my bank knows where I spend my money.

Not a tiny crap. The convenience of cashless and being able to manage my money to the penny via my phone far outweighs any paranoid concerns about the Natwest knowing I just spent £10 in Asda.

Ah, but it won’t just be your bank who knows will it ?!!

Precipice · 02/11/2022 12:35

Someone who's lost their wallet also /has/ to only pay cash until they can get another card.

We run a small business and it costs a fortune paying cash into the bank these days, let alone trying to find a local one.

We stopped taking cash after the pandemic hit, and won't go back to taking it - it's too much like hard work these days.

Can you please give me the company name so I know not to use you?

Motheroftweenagers · 02/11/2022 12:36

I went to Sweden for work a couple of years ago and struggled to find cafes or bakeries that accepted cash.

If their purse/wallet has been lost or stolen, presumably their cash was in it, so they have no cash!

Who else? The government? Elon Musk? Donald Trump?

I don't really care, to be honest.

YouSirNeighMmmm · 02/11/2022 12:38

Why is it that card users object to other people having choice?

gamerchick · 02/11/2022 12:39

Going to be well fucked if we start with the power cuts.

Okay, so they were paid in cash. You should have taught them to put their cash in the bank and how to use a card from pre-teen age.

I hope that you stood up to vulnerable people in Sweden by keeping looking.

YouSirNeighMmmm · 02/11/2022 12:39

for not to!

SkylightSkylight · 02/11/2022 12:39

bruffin · 02/11/2022 12:18

but with a card nowadays you see instantly how much you have left.

@bruffin

i never said otherwise.

however, the OP claims she can't/won't download a banking App.

that wasn't my point though, my point was the OP saying if you pay by card you must have lots of money, which is just nonsense.

AloysiusBear · 02/11/2022 12:39

It doesn't bother me at all. I haven't really used cash in years and never have any.

CapMarvel · 02/11/2022 12:40

gamerchick · 02/11/2022 12:39

Not really. It's not like shops can stay open without power regardless of how you pay.

BIG difference is that with id you can go to the bank and get cash out, unless you bank with metro where you can get a new bank card the same day then you have to wait for a new card to come down. In my case I waited over 3 weeks! Also with the Royal Mail strikes the chances of anyone receiving a card quickly is hugely reduced.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 02/11/2022 12:42

Southwig22 · 02/11/2022 12:32

Chill. You've misunderstood my post. You are choosing to pay cash but don't have to.

My post clearly stated that there is only one reason why people have to pay cash.

And I'm sure you have authoritative sources to back up that confident assertion.

Fuck off with your sneery 'chill,' as well.

Precipice · 02/11/2022 12:42

Kazzyhoward · 02/11/2022 12:37

Aside from the possibility of having some money in a pocket somewhere, if you've lost your card, you can withdraw money in-branch.

I can't see what you'd do under present circumstances if this happened in a cashless society. Maybe in such a scenario they'd introduce giving you a temporary pre-loaded card.

Left my wallet behind in a shop in another country once on the day I was flying back to the UK. Having some money not in that (new) wallet meant I could buy myself a dinner and pay for a bus ticket to the airport.

xogossipgirlxo · 02/11/2022 12:42

Thanks for letting me know, this way I know to not to buy in starbucks anymore.

SkylightSkylight · 02/11/2022 12:42

pumpkinscoop · 02/11/2022 12:22

For those saying it's cheaper for businesses to use electronic payment methods rather than cash and the costs and risks associated with managing cash, I'm sure, as soon as cash has been eliminated from society, the banks will decide it's actually quite expensive to process electronic payments and will ramp the fees up.

@pumpkinscoop that's a distinct possibility, the only thing that makes me feel it's not likely is the competition between banks. I think that'll keep it under control.

gamerchick · 02/11/2022 12:42

Itloggedmeoutagain · 02/11/2022 12:17

Of course you have control!
For a start you can put a limit on the amount you can spend on your card.
You can still write it down when you spend £4.
There's nothing stopping you budgeting if you can't pay cash.

Not everyone has online banking. I'm assuming that's what you mean.

gamerchick · 02/11/2022 12:42

It was but I'm pretty sure if you went into a branch they would do this

antelopevalley · 02/11/2022 12:44

I use cash in Starbucks. I would stop going somewhere that does not take cash.

RedRiverShore2 · 02/11/2022 12:45

I haven't got any banking apps on my phone as I find them annoying, I use cards though all the while, I have eight different ones, so that would be a lot of pesky apps if I was to need an app for each one but I also think cash should be an option also. I don't go anywhere that needs an app as I don't want them cluttering up my phone.

antelopevalley · 02/11/2022 12:45

CapMarvel · 02/11/2022 12:40

Our corner shop and local pub stayed open during a local power cut.
