Starbucks don't take cash

AIBU to think this is ridiculous?

Took DS yesterday for a treat after school with his birthday money. We only spent £8 but as he handed over his £10 we were told, sorry we don't take cash anymore, card payments only.

Is this just the start of the slippery slope down to a cashless society ?

Really annoyed me!

Oh. I don’t like that at all. I never pay cash, but the option should still be there

FamilyTreeBuilder · 02/11/2022 09:49

They obviously think it works for them as a business. There is a lot of cost associated with using cash, banking cash, securely storing cash, getting change.

luxxlisbon · 02/11/2022 09:50

Doesn’t bother me.

SpookyMcGhoul · 02/11/2022 09:52

I think it's fairly common now - all the Starbucks by me only take card / app / phone payments. I saw that it saved them ££££ in time processing the cash they used to receive!

Withnoshoes · 02/11/2022 09:52

A lot of businesses like some bars/restaurants were doing this years ago as they find it easier and they are also safer, don’t have large volumes of cash on site or have to bank/pay a security firm to take. It doesn’t bother me as I use Apple Pay mostly as it’s easier. But I can see why it bothers many.

JudgeRindersMinder · 02/11/2022 09:53

Yet another reason to not give them my business!

WhatAboutGiraffes · 02/11/2022 09:53

ChakaKhanfan · 02/11/2022 09:53

More places closer to me are doing this- I guess it’s safer as well as they aren’t storing cash on premises. It started after covid for hygiene reasons but has stuck around
doesn’t matter to me

skgnome · 02/11/2022 09:56

I hardly ever have cash, so doesn’t bother me personally - I don’t know of that many people that carry cash
and I know a lot of places do it
i do feel the option should still be there…. But also feel it’s the way things are going… don’t agree in principle, but I’m not helping since I will only go to places that will take card

AMorningstar · 02/11/2022 09:57

I hate places that don't take cash. Cash is legal tender. I don't want a degradation into a society where all payments are digital and can be tracked

PeekAtYou · 02/11/2022 09:58

I saw Starbucks comment on this online. It's not company policy but up to the store/franchisee. A lot of Starbucks have chosen to be cashless.

Costa, Pret and Cafe Nero accept cash

YellowTreeHouse · 02/11/2022 09:59

Good. Cash is thankfully dying out.

GoodnightGentleBoris · 02/11/2022 09:59

I think this is a sign from above to go to a place that serves actual coffee and isn’t a tax dodging corporate

Pghbuffy · 02/11/2022 09:59

Well I'll be avoiding Starbucks from now on. It is a slippery slope.. Everything made traceable.

Musti · 02/11/2022 10:01

Well I hate places that only take cash.

Absolutely this ☝️

I was recently given £600 by my grandad for the kids’ bank accounts, in cash. Their junior accounts are connected to my current account and unless I was going into town anyway I just would never go to the bank in person. So I transferred £600 to their accounts from mine and thought “I’ll just spend this myself”. That was 2 months ago and I still have £100 in my purse because no fucker takes cash anymore 🙄

CoastalWave · 02/11/2022 10:03

We don't have much money. In order to budget, I take out cash weekly and use that to buy petrol, food and anything else that we need.

Clearly I'm not making a habit of going to Starbucks as to me it's a luxury, so in normal day to day life, this wouldn't be an issue personally.

However, spending birthday money?

Cash is legal tender. How can they just refuse it?

Just out of principle, I am never ever going in there again.

We are in danger of heading to a place where nowhere takes cash, and you won't be allowed on the train today because you didn't pay a parking ticket in time. Is cash disappears, it's disastrous imo for society.

I don't like it, I rarely use cash but the option should be available. I've noticed a few shops in my town stopped taking cash during Covid restrictions and have continued since

Takingabreakagain · 02/11/2022 10:02

Absolutely this ☝️

I'm starting to make a point of taking cash out and paying, in cash, at places that take cash. I never used to feel as strongly but I want to make a point of supporting businesses that do take it because I don't want cash to disappear.

Agree with this completely

Mojoj · 02/11/2022 10:05

Just take your business elsewhere. That's what I do.

MichaelFabricantWig · 02/11/2022 10:05

I’ve used Starbucks twice in the last few days (I know, I know) and paid cash both times - different branches. Maybe there are local variations than a blanket decision.

Takingabreakagain · 02/11/2022 10:06

@AMorningstar I've started to do this but I think I can do more. Cash is legal tender and I can't understand how places are allowed to not accept it

Yes I would so rather go to a local cafe and support them. Starbucks is crap coffee anyway.
