To think the BBC use photos to sway public opinion?

(Light-hearted but true). The BBC are meant to be the voice of neutrality, but often their photos are far less neutral than their text. This one of Matt Hancock quite obviously says "What a Prat!": ttps://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-63471923.

I've noticed photos of Rishi Sunak so far make him look competent and composed, so I'm guessing he is in a "BBC Honeymoon Period". I'll be interested to see if they get steadily more awkward and dishevelled over the coming months, if his plans for the economy go awry.

Are there any photos of Matt Hancock where he DOESN'T look like a cock?

But you're writing that knowing that he's a cock. They chose one that would lead someone who'd never heard of him to assume he's a cock rather than one which would make him look relatively normal

I think they’ve chosen awful ones of Truss. I don’t like her policies but they’ve gone along with, and reinforced, the ‘Thick Lizzy’ narrative which has a faint whiff of misogyny too. I don’t see many male politicians get the ‘thick’ description, but many female ones do (Abbott, Truss, Dorries are some examples).

Guavafish1 · 01/11/2022 22:31

The BBC is as neutral as Russia today and North Korean news!

Arenanewbie · 01/11/2022 22:41

I clicked YABU just because of your example with Matt Hancock. It’s a really good photo of him, the other one with pink tie which @Melliphant posted is much worse imo.

I think, when most of our mainstream media and public discourse is dominated by right wing voices, something that isn’t, feels radically left, because it’s out of step with the prevailing orthodoxy.

JassyRadlett · 01/11/2022 22:50

Why pick on the BBC, OP? Can you point to a media outlet that doesn't do this?

BBC News, ITV News, Channel 4, Sky News (these days) dominated by right wing voices? Interesting thought. Newspapers more so, but no one buys them any more.

Is this a joke or have you fallen for the liberal left media's constant labelling of everything to the right of Lenin as "far right"? Public discourse is dominated by the liberal left in every part of life in this country.

To be fair, they chose deliberately bad photos of Corbyn too. Liberal-left bias.

Are there any good ones?

Ingrainedagainstthegrain · 02/11/2022 00:02

I don't think it's possible to be unbiased.

Nonsense. The due impartiality duty is a licence condition for all television service providers, not just the BBC.

sst1234 · 02/11/2022 07:34

The BBC is signing its own death warrant very slowly. It is such a shame that a great institution with so much influence and soft power has been reduced to a dying organization by mediocre left wing ideologues.

The bbc is paid for by a license fee. It is supposed to be a media outlet owned by the people for the people. It doesn’t rely on pandering to certain demographics of politics in order to sell more subs or papers. It had a duty to be impartial.

Jesus how far to the right do you have to be to think the BBC is left wing, the organisation that put Jeremy Corbyn in a picture straight off some dodgy Russian propaganda site and constantly edited footage of Boris Johnson to seem like he was getting less criticism than he actually was, let me guess a certain German chancellor was woke af in your eyes 🤔🙄

It’s not as simple as that. The BBC is built on a liberal belief system. In fact it’s entire ‘reason for being’ is to put the onus of responsibility for the world’s problems at the feet of government and state. The constant view that you will notice runs through all of its reporting and news stories is that the public’s plight is due to government failings, not due to our own making. The public as payers of the license fee, is always beyond reproach.

So, whatever government we have the bbc will play the interrogator role: holding it to account on our behalf.

The reason, therefore, that people see the BBC as left wing is because it will never ever suggest that, for instance, Joe here is cold and poor because he hasn’t got a job. It’s always because ‘the government should be doing more to help him’. The BBC doesn’t believe in personal responsibility (a right wing belief) or that we are the makers of our own destiny. These are conservative values (with a small c).

On the other hand, the BBC has to be careful not to swing too far to the left. It will never be revolutionary as it needs the Government on side to pass on the license fee. Essentially whatever government is in power has the power to destroy it. This means it cannot be seen promote the opposition hence Jeremy Corbyn.

So, left thinks it’s right wing and vice versa.

What utter nonsense.

How can you say that the right are all about individual responsibility? They’re not. They’re about individual power. The power of certain individuals over others. How many times do we see right wingers fail to take any responsibility for anything? So the concept of responsibility is quite alien I would suggest.

Left wing is about collective power. Not about no individual responsibility.

There is a difference.

We all pay taxes and vote in return for a government that uses its power to ensure that macro forces benefit as many people as possible. That doesn’t let people off the hook for doing anything for themselves, it’s just about levelling the playing field a bit so that they can make the best of their own lives. The problems come when we get to extremes - like our current government (which casually gives away wealth to donors and corporations) or extreme left wing positions such as communism (where government provides all utilities).

The BBC is in no way left wing. I would suggest you check who the Chairman and Chief Executive are and woven through many corespondents - the close links to the Conservative Party.

It depends on what your take on conservatism vs liberalism is. And be careful not to mix up the Conservative party with conservatism. They are not the same. The current Conservative party is not conservative. It’s stepping in to help people people with their bills during Covid and recently the cost of living crisis is more on a par with socialism. We don’t have a Conservative party. Liz truss tried to form one but see how that turned out. All in all, Conservative is you take responsibility for yourself, liberal or left is we should all take care of each other.

Small c conservatism is, to me, about adhering to traditions and minimising the role of the state. Retaining property/wealth to
those families and individuals that already have it (which ignores the reality that if you take that approach, there’s a reduction in opportunity for others).

The idea of personal responsibility isn’t about politics to me. I know that the Conservative Party try and stake their claim to it but what they really mean is individuals can be thrown to the wolves unless they deem them to be “deserving poor”.

So now we're getting Jeremy Hunt looking wild eyed and slightly demonic ahead of the Autumn Statement. Poor bloke probably hasn't had much sleep lately:

Generally people think the bbc is bias towards the view they do not share. They are pretty central non partisan overall (the labour government complained they were right wing!)

90% of stories are not bias, having lived overseas, you realise what an amazing job they do manage! Yes there's an element of bias through selecting the stories covered on the main bulletins - that gives airtime to an issue but that's about it.

Confirmation bias means if you watch something you agree with you think they are correct whereas if it's an issue you personally don't then they must be wrong in reporting it? I'm guessing from the woke comments here you are referring to gender identity, but this is really happening, unless you are in a bubble you will experience this - we have young adults so trans people are coming into our home, their friends, have a trans relative etc.
