So the new Tory welfare minister thinks cutting maternity rights would be good for business:

Yet another man commenting on womens rights. We could end up like the US where women have no formal right to maternity pay or leave and it’s all down to individual companies.

Aibu to be utterly sick of this shit. It’s not the mark of a decent society. I can see them going after paid holidays too etc.

Fuck this government.

Yes, but the Tory party supposedly know what a woman is and that's all that matters according to a lot of posters on mumsnet.

Oh really- I have missed all of that!

if they move to the US system (which is what they want) everyone will be fucked -
no rights, no affordable healthcare, work work work until you drop dead

What's the alternative?

The last part of that article is relevant:

A spokesman for Mr Stride last night said: “This article is from over a decade ago. As it made clear at the time, Mel was not arguing against these kinds of employee rights and believes maternity leave has a vital part to play in facilitating the participation of women in the workforce.”

Reducing maternity rights isn't something that's ever been in a Conservative party manifesto as far as I can tell. Do you think that this will change due to this appointment?

Disgusting. I dread to think what life will be like for my 12 year old daughter as an adult.

Devil's in the detail: article in which this bloke said these things was more than 10 years ago.

Now, that doesn't mean he doesn't still think it - but it's a massive leap to suggest he's actively proposing it now.
