To think there must be something wrong with baby?

Not really an aibu, but posting for traffic as I'm losing the plot.

DC is 6 months old and we've had nothing but trouble with feeding, right from the start. Regular projectile vomiting, slow weight gain, feeding refusal, countless hospital visits.

Baby is on prescription formula (amino acid) for suspected cmpa, omeprazole and now movicol as it was recently discovered following an abdominal xray that they're "full of poo". However they've never seemed constipated, gone once a day, soft etc. But the minute they started on stool softners, the reflux and fussing improved hugely.

We've started weaning because I'm aware we need to get a move on at their age. It's tough going as we have been told to be dairy, soy and coconut free. So it's been mostly single vegetables and fruit but even that's not straightforward - apple gave horrific acid to the point of choking. I am trying to avoid aggravating foods. I know babies tend to get constipated when they start weaning but this has been going on since day dot and they're on the maximum dose of movicol.

They've had a barium swallow and we will get the results tomorrow when we meet with a paediatric surgeon - this was arranged by another paediatrician because it had been suggested dc may have anterior anus, although this has since effectively been ruled out by a different surgeon - if you call a quick peek in their nappy enough to rule it out anyway.

So aibu to think an inability to poo when one is not constipated is possibly something to worry about and does anyone have any ideas what it might be? I am aware of hirschsprung disease but because dc passed meconium fine we've been told this is unlikely 🤷‍♀️

I think no one will be able to give your specific medical advice as it sounds like he’s got a lot going on, and he’s under the right people who sound like they are looking into things for you.
But didn’t want to read and run and say it sounds horrendous for both of you and hope tomorrow is better when you get results and more of a plan.

InsertPunHere · 01/11/2022 16:01

I think we random mumsnetters aren't going to be able to give you useful medical advice, but I am sorry you're going through such a lot of complications for your poor baby. I hope you've got lots of support for you and your baby IRL.

how worrying, sounds like it’s all being taken seriously which is good.

i wouldn’t rush at weaning just because she is 6 months though, maybe talk to the consultant you see tomorrow about the best approach to take with it.

Whycantmybabypoo · 01/11/2022 16:04

Thank you @InsertPunHere and @NoSki - I just thought there's a veryyyy small chance someone else's Dc might have had similar so worth asking. But you're right, it's very niche and I probably do just need to wait 😕

The dietician said babies need extra iron and iodine once they reach 6 months so I've been panicking about getting on with it, especially as it's so slow going with potential allergies and reflux (although I am starting to question the allergies and think the symptoms were actually maybe more to do with the poo situation!)

Hi. One of my sons was similar to this as a baby. Threw up my breast milk constantly unless I ate really bland foods (which only slowed it down) - was on the same formula and meds after seeing the DR. Eventually I saw a specialist dr privately (having another poorly baby at home already!) and had skin prick tests and elimination diets to work out what he was allergic to - which was pretty much everything! We weaned very slowly sticking to ‘safe’ foods, stripped his diet bare when he reacted and by the time he was 14 months he had pretty much grown out of everything. Oh and started to sleep more than 3hrs in one go. It was horrific.
i sadly don’t have any answers or conclusions for you but my son is a strapping, super-healthy 9-yr old who eats the healthiest diet and is thriving with no allergies.
I am convinced it was simply an immature stomach and maybe reflux but have no firm answers. He was 2 weeks late and very big so no developmental delay signs or anything.
I hope it gets better for you too and feel free to PM me if you think I can help!

Thanks for such a detailed reply. We've had skin prick tests (all negative) and also seen a private Paediatric GI - he said he can't do any more for DC, they need to be in the NHS system otherwise care is too fragmented because of the limitations of what they can and can't do in the private sector. Do you think your sons reflux had anything to do with how much or little he pooped?
