Sorry no AIBU but hoping people can share your best tips for keeping a busy house with lots of kids organised. Examples are:

  • keeping a roll of bin bags in the waste bins so you don’t have to go searching when you change the bag
  • Wipe clean board somewhere easy to reach to write things you run out of as you use them so you don’t forget to get them in the next shop
I’d love to hear yours please 🙏

We have two preteen girls. We put a herb rack sized shelf next to the mirror where the hairbrush and hair ties are kept. Its made getting ready so much easier. Weve just added a couple of hooks for school ties.

Oh that’s a good one! thank you @PuttingDownRoots hairbands and brushes hide themselves in this house!

Shoes and coat immediately go on a rack by the front door. No more hunting them down daily. Bags packed for work/school the night before and put by the door. Shower/bath rinsed and wipes after every single use.
Never pass by something that needs to go in the bin or be put away. If you used it, you deal with it straight away.
A set of cleaning equipment on every floor of the house - quicker and easier to clean and no more lifting things up and down stairs. Streamline cleaning equipment - no one needs multiple sprays etc!
Golden rule - cleaning is everyone’s responsibility not just one persons role, it’s just let of everyone’s everyday existence.

A ring bound, lies-flat diary.. always by my side at the PC & I can see exactly what needs to be done each day. Yes, I know people put things on their phone, but this is always here, looking at me!

Juiceorjuice · 31/10/2022 13:12

I hear you @mamabear715 I really find this works with the shopping list when we’ve run out and having a more general, visible write on something is a great idea.
thanks@Alphabet1spaghetti2 yeah getting the kids to tidy up after themselves without having to ask a million times is the golden goose!

Better than a whiteboard for us is an App like Google Keep on all adults and teens phones with a shared household shopping list. Add item as soon as you finish it or realise something needed. Whoever is shopping next checks it off the list.

Label things in cupboards. Boxes for chicken and beef stock cubes, have a spare cupboard for back-up food like sauces, beans etc and multi buy.

i have a wardrobe in the hall way for shampoos etc. i stock on them too.

@Juiceorjuice yes it is! But if all other persuasive arguments/tricks persist, then say that anything left out goes in the bin - then whisk it away into a bag or box in the boot of the car…. Short term tears for long term gain. (You can give it back under the cover of darkness once the message has sunk in.).
