Sicky baby help please

Dd is 6 months old and was very sick last night. At first I thought I had overfed her as I woke her at 11 before bed (as usual) for her last feed but she seemed fussy and disinterested. She did take some but was then violently sick and had a really explosive watery poo which required a total change of bedding and clothes.

She slept after that for about 5 hours until her next bottle in the middle of the night as normal. She had this and immediately had another episode of diarrhoea afterwards. Not as much as earlier and no sickness this time. She's woken up in a happy enough mood but I'm worried about dehydration if she's unwell again after her morning bottle. I've never had to deal with diarrhoea in a baby so young before. Any advice appreciated.

Sounds like it’s working it’s way through her if she wasn’t sick the second time.
Watch out for wet nappies, that’s good, although you can’t always tell if there’s diarrhoea !
See how she goes after her next bottle.
If she’s well in herself that’s a good sign.

If she’s bright and alert and taking her feeds well now she’ll be Ok. You could give her some extra water between if it continues.

Could be either tummy bug or chest infection
see how she goes for 24 hrs and get to gp if not getting better

I always watch for temperature. If raised, I would give calpol or nurofen to manage it and if it didn't work, I would call the doctor.
Is she weaning yet? Yoghurt is always a good bet for a little one struggling to eat or drink.
I would probably just try the usual milk but possibly a slightly smaller amount until she's feeling better. If it continues today, I would call the doctor as always better to check with a young baby.

Paeds nurse here. Keep an eye on wet nappies. If she goes 10-12 hours without a wet nappy, or her urine becomes very dark yellow/orange she will need to be seen by a doctor. If she’s well in herself, she is fine to go light on the food for 24-48 hours and just concentrate on hydration. Little and often is the best way to go after sickness. Hopefully it passes quickly!

Thank you all, she has managed to keep a few oz down this morning. Will offer small amounts often. It's so scary when they are violently ill like that at such a young age.

We are in the very early stages of weaning but I don't think I'll give her anything today. She is a CMPA baby so she can't have yoghurt anyway.

No more vomit which is great and she seems well in herself. However she's done two more horrific poos - very watery still but with some greenish chunks in Envy I've never seen anything like it with her and if she'd had solids I'd assume it was undigested food but she has only had milk the past few days. Any ideas?

Is she teething by any chance? I thought teething poops were a myth until my buba had really watery poos!
He also had a temp, and was very very sick (though, he's breastfed so I can't comment on the amount, only that it seemed to be a lot more than usual!)
He popped his first two teeth within a few days after that. He's just turned 6 months

Is she OK in herself? Awake an alert? Or sleepy?

froggie23 · 31/10/2022 14:00

Yes she has her first tooth coming through at the moment so it could be linked. But my god I've never seen poo like it! And she has CMPA so I've seen some dodgy poo before!!

She is well, she's having her feeds albeit smaller amounts and she is a bit irritable but nothing too worrying. I think something is definitely bothering her not sure what :-/

ring surgery and get an appointment, you can always cancel if she is better

froggie23 · 31/10/2022 14:27

@ivykaty44 my GP is useless. They used to make it a policy to see children under 5 the same day but they don't do that anymore. They usually try to redirect you to the health visitor who is equally hard to get hold of. In this case I think they'd try to deter me from going into the surgery by saying it's a bug. However if she's no better tomorrow with the odd poop I will ring. Thankfully she's well in herself so im hoping whatever it is will pass.
