You should need a licence to use self checkouts

Hear me out.

Supermarket very busy this morning. Queued with my basket for the self checkout, as usual. I prefer them and enjoy the lack of social interaction required. 3 of them were out of order so only 2 working. There was a couple using one and I think it was their first day on the planet. They were just staring, puzzled at the screen. Occasionally scanning something. Eventually complete their transaction then realise they need to buy bags. 5 people completed their transactions on the other checkout while they were doing theirs.

Blowing my own trumpet, but I'm a self service ninja. I think you should have a certain competency level, like with driving, before being allowed to use one. You should be given a basket of items, including some loose fruit and veg and bakery items, and a set time to complete the transaction in order to earn a licence.

anything here (or Reddit) that starts with "hear me out" is automatically BU in my book.
It is always the precursor to U behaviour (or being the A on Reddit)

Yes, OP, you are a vastly superior person for knowing how to use the check out. Is that the validation you're looking for? Also you may need to buy vaseline next time you go out, those judgy-pants you're wearing must be hoiked right up to make you sound so unpleasant. That's bound to chafe.

I use them in Sainsbo's because I don't like interacting but oh boy, can I suggest you avoid the self-check out in Poundland? The weighing part on two of theirs wasn't working and it was a bloody nightmare, with long queues and staff busy on tills so couldn't be in two places at once.

You don’t shop in Lidl then? I’ve never managed to get through their self checkout without help. There’s always at least one item it doesn’t recognise - the staff look for but can’t find the code, so they grab something of similar value off the peg, scan that and say on you go.

Except bizarrely the kitchen cleaner - they didn’t bother substituting, just shrugged and let me have it.

Bloody hell. Some of the comments on this thread! I'm sure it was supposed to be light-hearted.

I've never had a problem with self scan in Lidl

I only use self checkout if I’m buying a few items. Large weekly trolley shop I’d rather use the staffed checkout.

RedAppleGirl · 31/10/2022 13:36

Self-scan, cash machines, junctions, roundabouts, general queues.
There's always going to be somebody struggling with these situations, one has to be patient.

Beware using those in Morrisons - they might want to charge you £900 for cherry tomatoes:
