We have lived in our house for over 20 years. We have a 3 light chandelier in our dining room. This evening I switched it on, there was a 'plink' and it went out ☹️ I said to DH 'oh, all the bulbs have gone'. And I SWITCHED IT OFF. As I switched it OFF all the lights came on. So the light switch is now in the exact opposite position to how it was. WTF???

For those in the know ((which is me as I have worked for more than 1 electrical contractor)) you can tell if a light switch is on or off by the position of the switch, years ago they used to have 'on' written on the top of the switch. So my switch used to have the protruding part at the top when it was on. It's now at the bottom.

AIBU to not get any sleep tonight in case the ghoulies return to play with my lights? 😱

Well that's not true. It depends whether the lighting circuit is wired normally closed or normally open.

Hoardasurass · 29/10/2022 22:19

I would expect that you have got more than 1 light switch for the light as most sitting rooms do and someone has turned it on or off with the other switch. Just turn it off at the other switch

I think most people know how to recognise when a switch is in the ‘on’ position without having worked for an electrical contractor, it’s not something you have to be specifically ‘in the know’ about.

Is that the only switch for that light?

I've lived here for over 20 years, I think I'd know if there was another switch. It is the dining room. It happened whilst I was actually using the switch.

Unless a light switch is put in upside down they have a very distinct on and off. Unless they are 2-way switch, which we do have in our house but this is not one.

And you may be surprised at how many people don't know (and couldn't care less) that a switch has a 'normal' on off position as long the lights go on and off...

I think you need a new light switch.

Top insider knowledge there 😂

don’t be ridiculous, everyone knows how a light switch works!

Allsnotwell · 30/10/2022 09:12

Yes I do know the ‘on’ position of a light switch and I know one is upside down and I know there’s a three way in the landing and two switches for the kitchen light - and two for the hallway! Someone knew what they were doing in this house!

ShaunaTheSheep · 30/10/2022 09:23

Short circuit?

Our landing light has three-way switches. I manage to operate it quite simply by noting if the bulb is illuminated 😂

mogsrus · 30/10/2022 09:27

You don’t get normally closed/ normally open on lighting circuits that’s for micro switches etc

You get mixed up as you don't have the "insider knowledge" the op has 😂
