When she is clearly still overweight ? AND it's just a rehash of low carb?
AND it's called Pig to Twig. TWIG?????

Phew, there, I've said it.

I am prepared to be told I am a nasty piece of work.

(By the way I am overweight too)

clothes sizes do my head in.

I've just been reading an article in She magazine about diets - person A says that 10 yrs ago she was 5'5", weighed 9st 7lb and was a size 8.
Well I'm 5'5" and when I weighed 9st 7lb, I was a size 12/14.

That is a huge discrepancy.

and them there's Person B

5'6", 14st size 16

me 5'5", 11st, size 16 - that's 1 inch shorter, 3 st lighter and the same size - how can this be?????

TheFallenMadonna · 28/01/2008 18:28

Either person B is extraordinarily well-muscled or she is not a size 16.

Muscly types are very dense I think, which is how DH has a higher BMI than me, although he carries very little fat.

i totally understand being size 16 and full of self loathing. as well as size 16 and jubilant at slimness.

fgs you all know this: it's all about what you were before, how you feel about it, whether you fit in clothes you never have before or cannot fit into anything in your wardrobe. it is also about build.

size 16 can look outright huge. and it can look slim. and it can feel either too.

really bemused as to why anna888 has had a slating for this, and implication that she is some kind of controlled by husband freak is frankly weird.

Heathcliffscathy · 28/01/2008 18:32

quite mmj. so why are you giving her a hard time for not liking herself in a certain size. it is just a number and the individual attributes meaning to it, which should be respected.

Judy1234 · 28/01/2008 18:32

Women's clothes sizes for vanity reasons have been getting bigger and bigger so a size 10 now was probably 12 20 years ago so they're not really a good thing to go on.

Whoever said low GI is good is right. I think it's best if people change their eating habits to low GI/GL which is how I eat they will feel better and have a sustainable way of eating forever.

If some one loses 5 stones and get down to size 16 you have done really well and have probbably taken themselves from obese with danger to health to not danger to health at all but look like India knight in this week's Sunday Times which is not "stick thin" or even thin or even within healthy BMI - probably just a little bit above that which is not hugely important except if you want to look thinner.

As for Marilyn Monroe her weight fluctuated from 8 and a half stone up to 10 and half and she is my height 5 foot 5. At tend and a half and I feel a bit fat. At 9ish which is about what I am not I feel okay and a bit under in terms of aesthetics for me looks a bit better but I've never been below size 10 and I don't think very skinny women look good. What is annoying though is people saying 5 foot 5 and 14 stone is fine. I think it's over weight. Some people might like that look and yes it's not likely to kill you but it's not best for you. I know in the 1950s the average eight of a woman of 5 foot 5 was 8 and a half stone which is size 10 or possibly these days and probably looks good and is within normal BMI. Nowadays many women of 5 foot 5 are about double that weight at 17 stone.

Also for some women it does not work to have a little bit of foods they binge on and a lot of diets and perhaps India's (not sure as not read it) allow them to. That just primes them for more and the one biscuit becomes 10. So it's actually better just to eat the low GI/GL foods and change your eating habits for life.

Iota · 28/01/2008 18:33

well mmj - some people seem to think that a size 16 is huge - I'm 11st - that's about 7lb overweight for my height - if I drop half a stone I will be in the normal range.

duchesse · 28/01/2008 18:34

I find the not being lithe thing a problem, lie you, anna. Maybe it has more to do with the fact that I was 57kg and an 8/10 until about eight years ago, and am now on the wrong side of 67kg (but nobody ever believes that's what I weigh). I can remember being light. Someone who has since their teens been somewhat more covered might not mind so much about not being able to move as much as they could as children, because they don't expect to be able to.

Judy1234 · 28/01/2008 18:36

Bikram yoga.... it's very good to make you lithe. I was there tomorrow and there are people of all shapes there, large and small.

TheFallenMadonna · 28/01/2008 18:38

Quite. Which is why India Knight is probably pretty pleased at being the size she is, despite being "clearly still overweight" and "utterly humungous" .

I think maybe Anna got it in the neck because of the assumption that you can't be healthy and a size 16.

Sorry Anna.

Although I think you would be just as interested in other people's choice of words...

TheFallenMadonna · 28/01/2008 18:39

Ooh sorry. That was in response to sophable's post. Was distracted...

Tamum · 28/01/2008 18:40

"Bikram yoga.... it's very good to make you lithe. I was there tomorrow and there are people of all shapes there, large and small."

And it makes you psychic, eh?

TheFallenMadonna · 28/01/2008 18:40

Xenia - are you a time lord on top of all your other talents?

newgirl · 28/01/2008 18:43

i dont mind her size at all - i think she looks attractive

i do think it looks a very unhealthy diet though - high fat

Tamum · 28/01/2008 18:47

I agree newgirl- I think it's one think having an Atkins like diet in the short term while you lose weight and quite another to be on it long term.

Quattrocento · 28/01/2008 18:49

I agree with the OP.

It might of course be unsisterly of me to do so

But maybe a diet book is a pretty unsisterly thing to write?

The ethics of diet books stinks quite frankly.

Judy1234 · 28/01/2008 18:57

Apologies for typos. Bikam yoga was yesterday.

I think people need three balanced meals a day with protein, some healthy carbs like brown rice and veg. A just meat and veg diet is not going to balance things right for you or keep you mentally happy either which is more important than physical health. But in general most women in the UK could do with eating more meat too many are short of iron and less sugary foods, white bread, white flour.

hertsnessex · 28/01/2008 18:58

when i weighed 10stone i looked ill - seriously ill and im 5ft 10, i was a size 10. i was 'lollipop' head!

at a size 12/14 i looked thin

at a size 16 i looked curvy - but not 'bad'

at a size 18 i looked overweight

i fluctuate between a 16/18 in clothes but there is no way in the world that the BMI thing works at all for me. because my weight at a size 16/18 has a bmi of 27.

my weight at 10stone was normal (if i remember correctly) according to bmi and i looked awful.

its not just wieght/height it is structure.

i eat 5010 fruit veg a day, exercise (could be more obviously!), but to the poster who said 'a size 16 is unhealthy' is so very wrong. a size 10 FOR ME was unhealthy.

everyone is different , shouldnt that be celebrated, certainly no marked as though you are a junk food addict.

diet dont work - healthy lifestyles do.

Judy1234 · 28/01/2008 19:03

5 foot ten is very tall. My 5 foot 7 daughter is about 9 stone and certainly not skinny and very fit.

I am the average UK height of 5 foot 5 and in the 50s women my height were 8 stone 7. I think that or up to 9 stone if you want to look good in clothes and even naked..... is not wrong to aim for at my height and within a normal BMI.

Blu · 28/01/2008 19:06

But when i find myself experiencing self-loathing, as long as it is not for murder or pulling the chair out from an old lady as she is sitting down, I tell myself to get a grip - because women's biggest downfall (arguably - for this thread, anyway) is feeling self-loathing for things which are not really laothe-worthy. Loathe is a strong word! Being a bit fatter than you would like 9as I am, as it happens) is less than ideal, but sad, I think, if a direct provocation for self-loathing.

Actually, isn't self-loathing what makes you unable to look in a miror, see your size 16 self and feel happy?

If I suffered from self-loathing I would probably never feel happy looking in a mirror until I had had lipo-suction, a nose job, a hair transplanet etc etc etc.
