Christmas every four years only - who’s up for it?

MuttsNutts · 28/10/2022 10:32

Ok, so inspired by another thread but not wishing to hijack, I’ve decided it would be a great idea to have Christmas just once every four years.

Every year is just too much work, expense and forced jollity that leaves far too many people feeling inadequate, lonely and skint.

The ridiculous lead-up means that for over a quarter of the year, every single bloody year, we have it rammed down our throats at every turn.

So, as with the Olympics or World Cup, I’ve decided to campaign for it changing to just once every four years. I think even I could maybe get on board with it then.

Who’s with me?

No, its the best with little kids I wouldn't want to skip those ones and we always have chill cheap christmasses anyway.
If its stressful for you can you not just chill it out a bit

Habreathmint · 28/10/2022 11:43

Don't be so idiotic! It's a religious festival, not a sporting event.

PurpleButterflyWings · 28/10/2022 11:43

This thread puts me in mind of Christmas with the Kranks.

Where the couple tried to 'skip Christmas' and everyone in their neighbourhood turned against them.

Give it a whirl ... when you see it on the TV again, or see if it's on Netflix or Amazon. It's pretty good. And quite funny. Good Christmas fun! Grin

No! I adore Christmas and there’s no forced jollity here. It’s the nicest part of the year 🎄🥂

KillingLoneliness · 28/10/2022 11:45

No way! It’s our favourite time of year! It’s not about the money or the food, for us it’s about having fun together, decorating the house and the tree, drinking hot chocolates and watching movies, the whole atmosphere is just different for us, gifts are just a bonus and you can’t give what your can’t afford.
I’m not religious and don’t celebrate the Christian Christmas (our Christmas resembles the original pagan traditions more) but I can’t imagine any people would willingly give up celebrating something that is connected with those faith.
No one needs to celebrate Christmas if they don’t want to but everyone can also celebrate it in their own way.

FamilyTreeBuilder · 28/10/2022 11:45

Because people who dislike Christmas want nothing more than to sit down and watch a Christmas movie, right @PurpleButterflyWings ? 🙄

Also this underlying idea that if you dislike Christmas there is something fundamentally wrong with you, and you need decent people to show you the error of your ways.

Urgh.

This.

All the pressure and gift giving people put on themselves is not mandatory.

How many christmases have been dogged by expectations due to a serious illness?

Past 6. It’s fine. It is what it is and I’m not about to leave them alone for the festivities. But thank you.

Namechangerr1 · 28/10/2022 11:47

Agree!

cantley · 28/10/2022 11:47

I've made Christmas into a time I really enjoy every year by cutting back the gift giving to my husband and adult children only, no Christmas cards, decorating the tree but not going full Santa's grotto, making beautiful food and catching up with friends and family but not in a frenzy.
I buy nearly all gifts online so I don't have to go to the shops. I hate Mariah Carey etc being played.
Scale it all down, only do what you enjoy and don't worry about what other people say or do.
I went through a stage of loathing Christmas and now I love it.

Completely agree with your last paragraph.

Vapeyvapevape · 28/10/2022 11:50

I dislike Christmas and would be happy not to participate , I wish the shops were banned from putting out Christmas stuff until November .

IncompleteSenten · 28/10/2022 11:52

No thanks.

It's as expensive as you choose it to be. You don't have to spend loads to have fun.

I really like the dark depressing winter to be broken up by lights, decorations and nice food and drink.

The pagans had the right idea. Christians knew it. That's why they stuck Jesus's birthday on top of it.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/10/2022 11:53

I'd like to think that the birth of Jesus is important enough to be celebrated every year. The fripperies are optional.

Daisychainsx · 28/10/2022 11:53

If you don't like Christmas don't celebrate it? Surely that's an option? I don't like Halloween, never have, the shops are stuffed to the brim with decorations and all of the houses around me are decorated. I don't care. I just don't decorate my own house or buy into any of the Halloween traditions.
It always confuses me when people feel forced into half heartedly celebrating something they don't want to, then moaning about it 🤷‍♀️

FamilyTreeBuilder · 28/10/2022 11:27

It's the most womderful time of the year - no it's not. Not by a LONG stretch.

That's one song I do look back on with love and nostalgia - brings back very happy memories of DC's babyhood and Baby Sensory Christmas parties - but as far as your point is concerned I SO agree! It really isn't.

Spring, and the return of light and sunshine, is the most wonderful time of the year!

InPraiseOfBacchus · 28/10/2022 11:56

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 28/10/2022 11:14

I would get suicidally depressed in winter if I didn't at least have the one bright spot of Christmas to look forward to.

I get S.A.D. and I would normally agree but... Christmas isn't a "bright spot" any more, it's a sordid, oppressive, blinding smear across Sept-Jan.

Maybe I'm just frazzled by the concept as I worked in retail for so long. I now associate it with mountains of landfill, plastic tat, anger, stress and waste. A three year break would do wonders for communities and the environment.

But as long as we worship on the altar of Capitalism nobody will ever let that happen.

The only hope is that the "four year Chistmas" becomes an aspirational middle class marker, then people might actually bite.

butterfliedtwo · 28/10/2022 11:58

Same.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 28/10/2022 11:58

You can have a consumerism Christmas every 4 years if you want, no one is forcing you to have any Christmas 🤔

I like the idea of being a crank ...

Probably just as well!

HairyMcLarie · 28/10/2022 11:59

Arf at 'religious festival'. Like shit it is!

The blessed Santa and the sainted Xmas tree and the holy X-Box

It's a capitalist come pagan festival with some nonsense Jesus shit washed over the top.

Religious folk can celebrate without an Ant and Dec Boxing Day special on TV and a Dove gift set.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 28/10/2022 11:59

But on the other hand...

KatherineofGaunt · 28/10/2022 10:38

Agree Christmas is a religious festival first and foremost. I don't like how commercialised it is and wish shops were banned from getting Christmas stock in before at least mid-November. But you can't just tell a whole religion that one of their festivals is now every 4 years.

I never start with songs etc until after Remembrance Sunday/ Remembrance Day. Whichever is latest

IreneJones · 28/10/2022 12:01

No! I love Christmas. It's my favourite holiday. We keep it very low key and just enjoy spending time together and catching up with family.
