For DS to wear shorts in smaller size?

Sorry I wasn't sure where to post this and I knew you lovely lot would know the answer.

My DH is 18 months and still wearing 12-18 months clothes. I've heard shorts can be worn if a smaller size as it's more the length and the waist.

I just wondered if you've had experience of your LO wearing shorts in a smaller size than they usually wear.

I'm having a clear out and wasn't sure whether to keep some shorts for early spring/summer next year or not.

Children's shorts are bizarrely enormous. My very average 4 year old wears age 2-3 in some styles and they still look big. She wears 4-5 or 5-6 in everything else.

Also, when they stop wearing nappies they can fit into smaller clothes so don't get rid of any shorts until they really grow out of them iyswim

DD is nearly 8. When she was 3 I bought her a pack of shorts that were officially size 10. She's been wearing them every year since and I get no sense that she can't wear them until she is actually 10. I might then make her stop wearing them as they'll become super short and that annoys me.

Best £12 I ever spent.

DS is almost 4 I just bought him 2-3 jeans from h&m because... They're the ones that fit him , he has a narrow waist and long legs, I wouldn't worry about labels. Sizes vary a lot between brands too. Next always come up huge on DS for example

DS went back into smaller age shirts when he came out of nappies. They were thigh length rather than knee length, but fitted around the waist again without a nappy.

Totally. DS is 6 and all the shorts he wore this summer were 2-3 or 3-4. The 3-4 ones are all kept for next year.

He wears 6-7 in tops and 4-5 in trousers for length but they have to be ones with the stretchy adjustable waists to pull them in enough to stay up. He is a totally average size I think. I don't get it.

Yip my daughter was wearing 2-3. I bought her 2-3 too and 12-18 shorts thought they wld fit. They fell down 😂 I had to go bk and buy 9-12 months! They fitted perfect and they wld never have fitted a baby!

I always keep summer clothes until next summer unless they're already too small.

DD wore her 9-12m shorts until she was 4!

It's great to get as much wear out of everything as possible.

PerrinAybara · 28/10/2022 12:04

My 11 yo DD has the same problem with leggings/trousers @Iamclearlyamug.

Agree with the difficulty of finding shorts out of season for trouser refusers @BogRollBOGOF. I stock up in summer and hope he doesn't go off the style or they don't disintegrate before next spring.

And, to answer the original question, 9 yo DS is still in 5-6 shorts.

RuthW · 28/10/2022 12:11

Why would you get rid if clothes that still fit now

Caterina99 · 28/10/2022 12:17

I just bought my 7 year old DS new joggers as his were getting so short on him. Those are a size 9

Hes comfortably wearing size 5 shorts for the past 3 years now and I think they’ll probably be fine for the year (for football etc) and I’ll get a bigger size for next summer, which then hopefully do a few years. I don’t know why they make them so giant!

I took some 9-12m ones back to M&S and told them the sizing was ridiculous - they fitted my 4 year old better than the baby. But M&S sizing has gone increasingly haywire and no one in store seems interested - when I worked there we could feed back to buyers but I get the impression it doesn't happen any more.

DS is still wearing school trousers aged 13/14.

He will be 18 in March😅
