"OP: I would like to buy a lovely perfume for my DSis who has just finished chemo. What's you're favourite?

Poster 1: What a nice thing to do! I like Chanel 19

Poster 2: Actually it's "your favourite"

Poster 3: Perfume is so personal. Do you know whether she likes floral/citrus/woody family? Here's a link to a helpful website.

Poster 4: I can't believe you were so insensitive Poster 2! OP is trying to do something nice for her sick sister and you're bashing her grammar!"

If it was left there then that would be fine. Poster 2 does deserve a telling off, or maybe two. But 500 posts later we are still alternating between odd-numbered posts where people make helpful suggestions about perfumes, and even numbered posts where people attack Poster 2's general poor character.

Can I please beg of you.
If you start to read a long thread, get three posts in and see a poster behaving very badly in a way which has nothing to do with the subject of the thread. Please please please don't immediately assume that you were the only person to spot this poor behaviour and you must cease reading immediately to reprimand them. Have a quick check down the thread to see whether fifty people have already put the boot in in increasingly harsh terms. Yes maybe your devastatingly worded fifty first reprimand will be the one which finally shows her the error of her ways, but that's not the way to bet.

And in the meantime the OP's helpful and lovely thread about perfume and sisterly love has become a depressing morass of people bitching about apostrophes.

YABU. The most annoying threads are the ones in, say, AIBU, with titles reading something like "Is this unreasonable…?"

The only time it's even a little bit understandable is if the thread has been moved by MNHQ, so a thread from Chat titled "Pet cockroaches" is now in the Pet Cockroaches section.

And it wouldn't even be so bad if I could just force myself not to click on them. But because there's a tiny chance they may be about something utterly fascinating I can't resist clicking, even though they're almost certainly about a mildly annoying SIL or the best variety of loo cleaner.

YABU. The most annoying are the S&B, Mother of the Bride or important wedding guest threads where OP swears blind she isn’t the typical MOB and wants something different. “I’m 55 but look 40 and like alternative dressing.” Establish budget and size. Reaffirms desire to look on trend.

Off I hare - burrowing down a hundred rabbit holes, all my best and most secret stores of fabulousness. Emerge hours later.

What does she choose?

Bombshell.

Effing Bombshell.

Those threads drive me to drink.

Agree about thread titles. I saw one once saying 'can anyone help me?' and it was about finding a Chinese restaurant at short notice in Berkshire.

Why do posters refuse to use the title to actually title their post? It's mental.

Then there are the ones who over dramatise the title ('am I unreasonable to shout at the woman in tescos' ) then spend the entire thread explaining how in fact they aren't unreasonable because they spoke politely and never shout.

I mean if you can't read YOUR OWN thread title there's not much hope for other people's.

The most annoying threads are the ones where the OP could just fucking Google the answer.

Example in the OP is literally happening to me on another thread at the moment. Despite being repeatedly tagged, I'm not responding.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/10/2022 11:57

Morris, you've reminded me of my old Head of Department who used the same title for every email she sent. 'Please'. Grin She sent a lot of emails, so our inboxes would be studded with emails from S all entitled 'Please' or 'Re: Please' and it was a nightmare trying to sort out which we had and hadn't read/responded to.

I am mystified and yet somehow intrigued.

The only annoying threads are the threads about how annoyed people are at other peoples threads 🤪

The most annoying threads are ones where the self-appointed Head Girl turns up and tells other people how to post on a public forum. Pipe down.

kittenkerfuffle · 28/10/2022 12:34

When the op won't give out crucial info, that would give more context to the Op,
Aibu everyone is laughing at my child's name, my mil can't pronounce my child's name properly, its a common name, but can't say because it's too identifying.'
Husband has x hobby, says I can't join hobby group as it's too dangerous too identifying, blah blah.
Can't say anymore or someone might recognise me in real life.

DismantledKing · 28/10/2022 12:36

Nah. Drip feeders are the worst.

Name99 · 28/10/2022 12:39

Long threads when the OP has asked advice, the situation has changed for example an abusive relationship, or suspected cheating.
30 pages in the OP has left the situation, taken action, moved on and someone comes along with LTB and their take on the situation or repeating what was said in the first few posts.

People are so desperate to offer their own opinion or advice without reading the full thread.
It's rude, they don't care what the OP is asking or going through they are just desperate to post, naively thinking that their advice will be essential.
It's very " cancel the cheque "
