As title suggests.
In-laws have a fairly young dog who was meant to be trained but is not at all.
Their last dog was also completely untrained, not volatile or aggressive but no recall on walks, jumping on dining table and chairs whilst people are eating, begging for food, and humping everything (gross).
We now have a toddler who they adore and they see regularly. They are excellent grandparents. They then got a puppy who was meant to be trained but is turning out the exact same way as the other dog.
Small fluffy creature who is mainly OK, but already jumps on table, they let the dog up on the chairs whilst we are sat eating, he tries to get the food, licks FIL plate whilst he is still eating (grim, grim, grim) and barks constantly at meal times. He does other doggy things like eat poo on walks which they don't stop, eats poo out of the cats litter tray and then they don't see an issue with the puppy then licking our 2 year old.
Playtime gets a bit rough with my toddler, he often comes home with scratches and holes in clothes. We've asked them to try and control it a bit but they're completely naive to any risks to our young child and completely in denial that the dog is not trained. They encourage our child to copy "dog behaviour" which is driving my wife nuts - carrying clothes and toys in his mouth for example and dropping it on the doormat.
They are just a tad odd with the dog and very naive regarding dogs and children. They're also those dog walkers who insist the puppy is fine off lead, but don't get dog etiquette of when another dog is on a lead they should control theirs and stop it jumping all over the other dog - there's been quite a few awkward encounters between then and other walkers and flustered PILs try to be jolly and laugh it all off rather than reading the social cues and seeing when other walkers just want the puppy away from their dog.
It makes me wonder what happens when we are not there but we try not to think about it too much because we are probably being OTT. The dinner and jumping all over the table is disgusting though.
My wife recalls her friends not being allowed to play at their house and it making her very sad, but she's realised with a lot of her parents antics the reasons why that probably was.
