I'm very noise intolerant, can it be fixed?

I find noise unbearable. I'll give some examples.

Visiting in laws, we are all chatting and they put the tv on loud, everyone talks louder over the tv so someone turns the tv up, it all gets louder and louder and my head feels like it's going to explode.

Ds watching noisy videos on YouTube, people shouting and screaming. sudden shrill high pitched screams. I can cope with normal cartoons but the shouting on YouTube drives me insane.

Dh and ds keep talking over one another, asking me questions or telling me thinks at the same time and I can't process what they're saying.

Persistent coughing.

Loud cats or motorbikes.

Any sounds like someone tapping on a desk or table.

Everything that goes on in our open plan office, people banging drawers, dropping things, sneezing loudly, loud ringtones, snorting when they laugh, eating loudly.

I could give many more examples. I hate being this way it makes life so difficult because obviously there's noise everywhere. I just want to run away with my hands over my ears.

I'm the same too. I reserve special hatred for people eating crisps on the train but everything mentioned here drives me absolutely mad. I really think that part of the reason my marriage is ending is because he is just so fucking noisy.

WeThreeKingsofOrientAre · 27/10/2022 21:27

You might like to look into a personality trait (not disorder) called Sensory Processing Sensitivity. You may identify that you are a HSP (Highly Sensitive Person). Check out Dr. Elaine Aron, Psychologist.

I honestly thought I was a bit weird for being like this too!

I cannot CANNOT stand certain noises or particularly repetitive ones.

Birds (pigeons) making their awful noise in the morning
Someone breathing loudly next to me
Snoring (I know this is a bug bear for many but it's repetitive and annoying)
Tapping
Dogs barking constantly

I also struggle to focus on one sound at a time when someone is talking and there's the tv on and the washing machine going for example

It actually makes me angry when I hear certain things! I sleep with a pillow over my head 80% of the time to drown out noise 🙈

reallyworriedjobhunter · 27/10/2022 21:29

Yes - Loop are amazing. I also have ADHD.

2020firsttimemum · 27/10/2022 21:29

@FairlyIncognito I have noticed this actually! My OH always tells me I have hearing of a bat! Very sound aware

Brefugee · 27/10/2022 21:30

one of my DC has been diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and they say noise cancelling ear buds, with or without white noise, are the best thing ever in the history of anything.

They have sort of dusty pink ones, and longish hair, so they are barely noticeable

America12 · 27/10/2022 21:31

I'm the same. I have ADHD and waiting an autism assessment.

beastlyslumber · 27/10/2022 21:33

I'm exactly the same. I do have adhd. I wear earplugs to sleep and when I go anywhere with other people, I'll have my earphones in playing music or podcasts. If I need to work, I play white noise - rain is good.

Pixiedust1234 · 27/10/2022 21:34

Can anyone do a link to their recommended earbuds/headphones please. I'm struggling because I cant stand anything inside my ears too. I'm special 🙄

Brefugee · 27/10/2022 21:38

if you don't like in-ear, the BOSE noise cancelling over-ear ones are great. But not discreet
TBH i think my DC doesn't have noise cancelling ones, just regular little JBL ones

Hexenjagd · 27/10/2022 21:42

if you have a bit of money to chuck at it, I covet these Bose noise cancelling headphones.

use a white noise app: lifechanging.

most of the Sony range has good reviews too.
but. IMO any noise cancelling headphones are better than not having noise cancelling headphones

i also like Loop earplugs or alpine — I think it will depend on which you find most comfortable.

I am the same I get very irritated by noise... mostly people Eating, sucking a sweet, sniffing .. breathing

TheDogsMother · 27/10/2022 21:49

For me it's strimmers, wood saws or anything constant and whining. People eating loudly, slurping, chewing gum, places being too loud (though not gigs oddly), people talking at me or talking over each other. It honestly triggers an instinct to run away.

Justleaveitblankthen · 27/10/2022 21:54

This has made me remember that it's almost bonfire night.
Can't bear the bangers in my street all night long. Absolutely get the rage. Complete waste of money IMO and scare all the pets, birds and other wildlife 😡

Julieup2 · 27/10/2022 21:55

i feel your pain!!, If my environment feels chaotic such as kids talking at the same time whilst tele on and the cat is miaowing wanting to be outside it gets too much. Motorbikes really really annoy me, but then I don’t mind a busy pub with loud music even if a friend is trying to speak to me so not sure what my problem is!

girlfriend44 · 27/10/2022 21:57

I'm the same the TV up loud drives me mad.

TheSoapyFrog · 27/10/2022 21:59

I have ADHD and this is a problem for me too. I wear Loop earplugs a lot of the time. I can still hear what's going on around me, but it takes the edge off.

MissCrowley · 27/10/2022 22:00

I cannot stand noises. If it's noisy and there's too many different noises I really cannot cope. Then if someone was to trigger another of my sense- say they were to touch me- that then pushes me over the edge and I get this horrendous rage and I have to remove myself as quickly as possible.

I've not been diagnosed as ADHD/ Autistic but there's something there I reckon.

Hankunamatata · 27/10/2022 22:03

I'm not great with noise. Hate YouTube screamers and cannot cope with one kids watching you tube and another watching TV - the competing noise makes me want to throw up. Interestingly I have 3 adhd and asd kids. I was raised as an only child so noise was never an issue at home

FancyFelix · 27/10/2022 22:14

I'm the same OP. Have never considered that I could be neurodivergent.

I think it's getting worse as I get older

WorriedMillie · 27/10/2022 22:18

I have diagnosed ADHD and I really struggle with noises- both anticipated (I really struggle when I know that the fridge/washing machine/dishwasher is about to alarm) and unexpected

For me, it’s a wider sensory thing- I also struggle with textures and tastes

EllieRosesMammy · 27/10/2022 22:22

You sound like me, it's called sensory overload. Common in people with ADHD or Autism. I'm considering buying some of those Loop earplugs off amazon because you're right, it's absolutely draining being this way 😥

Aintgointogoa · 27/10/2022 22:23

Another one for Loop ! Life changing for me !

Hexenjagd · 27/10/2022 22:24

@EllieRosesMammy just get the earplugs. Seriously. I can’t understand why on earth I put it off so long.

pastypirate · 27/10/2022 22:35

I have diagnosed adhd and definitely Misophonia.

I realise now I have had misophonia all my life it just changes a bit over the years. It started with car radios and all radios unless the signal was crystal clear it was painful.

Eating noises, throat cleaning and nose blowing are the most unbearable to the point where I cannot sit at a table and eat my own food if this is going on. Scraping cutlery also.

I don't mind loud noises but it can only be one at a time. For example I'm fine with fireworks and concerts but people taking over a loud tv line in the op make me feel quite I'll.

I am also very sensitive to odours and I suspect this is a similar thing.
