A parking one!

We live on a quiet road on an estate in which everyone has a drive with at least one parking space on it. Outside our house we have a small path leading to our front door and our driveway with a dropped kerb to our right. Admittedly outside our house isn't a dropped kerb and the pavement runs alongside our front room so our view is literally the street.

The people on the road behind us (who have their own driveway!) have taken to parking outside our house, next to our path, mounting the kerb as there is a shortcut path to their road from by our house. After several months of this, I left a polite note asking them to park further along as they have blocked access to our path. They've done so but are now parking right outside our house and front window! I know it's not ours, but really?? Why on earth would we want a view of their car right outside our house? Why not park on their own driveway?

AIBU or am I right to feel pure rage when I look out and see them parked right outside??

It's annoying, but unfortunately not wrong. However turning around in your drive is peak CF! Can you angle your car / put some nice plant pots there that stop that?

Noshowlomo · 27/10/2022 18:20

It makes me laugh when people are very “YABU it’s perfectly legal” when you KNOW if they were in your situation they’d be pissed off.
I have a drive big enough for two cars, but only half has a dropped kerb (we bought it like this, didn’t do this ourselves), but we can park another car we just have to drive over the kerb a bit.
Sometimes next door park blocking the bit of the kerb therefore blocking half of my drive. It’s perfectly legal but it pisses me off! Not least because they have their own two car drive but choose not to use all of it. They know our parents /visitors park on the other part of the drive but have never asked “do you mind if I park there for a few hours”
Pees me right off.
YANBU op

Badgirlriri · 27/10/2022 18:28

I know what you mean. Even if it’s legally allowed, socially it’s weird.
our neighbour has visitors and they park on the pavement between our drive and the road, blocking our cars in. We haven’t got a dropped kerb so they can. Although legally they shouldn’t be parked on the pavement anyway. But it’s bizarre to see.

Tiredmum100 · 27/10/2022 18:32

I know what you mean, we use to have a van park outside our living room window. I never chose to the live in the house we lived in at the time. Dh already lived there. Like you said there's nothing you can do about it, but its annoying all the same. I'm so glad we moved and have a big drive now. Can you start parking outside their window until the get the hint?

Weirdlynormal · 27/10/2022 18:35

Yeah, it’s a bit knobby. Legal, but knobby

Seashor · 27/10/2022 18:36

I’d be annoyed too op. I’d either park there myself or park in front of their house.
Just because you can do something doesn’t mean that you should and this is an example of that.

NaiceLeftie · 27/10/2022 18:45

I think the usual procedure in these circumstances is to wait till the car goes then put out a row of traffic cones / wheelie bins / penguin bollards to prevent them parking there again.

Be prepared to be gossiped about by your neighbours though…

Vanillalime · 27/10/2022 20:31

Can you park directly outside of their window & walk down the same path to your home? So basically do you them what they are doing to you? 😜😜😜

Be prepared to be prosecuted if you do that. It’s a public road. I used to remove traffic cones from the front of a neighbour’s house on a regular basis. Stupid bastards gave up in the end.

AliMonkey · 27/10/2022 20:43

You can't stop them parking on the road, but surely them mounting the kerb is illegal and you can report them for that?

Parking on the pavement is only illegal in London. It’s fine in the rest of the country.

FixTheBone · 27/10/2022 20:49

You are being a bit weird about it.

You need to ask them, without being weird.

Excuse me, I was just wondering why you Park outside ours all the time? Just sometimes we have guests etc....

ivykaty44 · 27/10/2022 20:56

id object to someone driving on the pavement, then storing the car on the path. Where are people supposed to walk?

DeadDonkey · 27/10/2022 20:56

I’d probably just park in front of their house - or park in front of mine so that they can’t.

Beside the car. It’s very rare to see a car occupying the entire pavement.

AliMonkey · 27/10/2022 20:58

@Blossomtoes I agree that parking on the pavement isn't illegal in all of the country, but driving along the pavement is (hence why I said "mounting the kerb" not "parking on the pavement". So unless they pick up their car and put it down on the pavement, they are driving it illegally to park it there. They can also be fined for causing a dangerous obstruction if it causes eg pedestrians to have to walk out into a busy road.

its not illegal, but not fine either if the car is blocking the pavement it can be reported to the police (for blocked pavements with a vehicle and engine its a police matter, non engine its council matter)

ivykaty44 · 27/10/2022 21:01

It’s very rare to see a car occupying the entire pavement.

not where I live its not, in fact the local council have installed notices in some streets and employ a parking fines company to stop drivers blocking the path. There were approximately 100 drivers a day doing this on a particular estate, now that there is a £60 fine for doing this the drivers have altered their behaviour.

Blossomtoes · 27/10/2022 21:03

Good luck with reporting a blocked pavement to the police. They’re not interested if your car’s stolen or you’re burgled. Report it and give them a good laugh.

BettyOBarley · 27/10/2022 21:10

I get you PP.
Our set up is exactly the same as yours and next door were doing this every single day for months - they had umpteen visitors so most days 4/5 cars outside including a huge mini van which they parked outside our window every day, sometimes leaving it there for days on end (while their drive was empty!) so we had a nice view of the side of a mini van most days.
We didn't speak to them about it as they were twats in general, but thank god they've moved now!
It might be legal, but a bit of thought for your neighbours doesn't go amiss!

That would actually be hilarious but I don't have the bollocks!

Why won’t you answer all the people asking why you don’t park outside your own house for a few weeks, to break them out of the habit?

DeePlume · 27/10/2022 21:27

They are allowed to park there but I understand how frustrating it is. I live on street of Victorian terraces with on street parking. Most days I have a black transit van parked right outside my window. It's so oppressive! But nothing I can do about it so I just moan to myself about it!

I have, in my second post in which I said that when I get a second car in a couple of months I will park there myself. Why don't you read the whole thread before posting sarcastic rude comments?

Gosh that does sound so frustrating. Once it gets on your grill it's impossible to shake! Particularly annoyed because we bought the house in the area bought it specifically because we didn't think there would be roadside parking regularly as everyone has their own drives. We didn't look at busy terraced roads for this reason!
