Is it true you can take a vet's prescription to a normal chemist and save money?

Just that.

Someone has told me that you can ask a vet to give you a written prescription (for medicines which you have to administer yourself of course - pills, cream ect) and rather than buy it from the vet (£££) you can go and order it from a chemist and just pay the prescription fee.

You still have to pay the vet's consultation fee obvs, for the time and expertise.

If this is a thing why isn't it better known?
Or is it just me that didn't know? 😫
Or are they talking bollocks?!

There are online vet pharmacies which I have used before. Pretty sure you can’t rock up to a normal chemist

hesbeingabitofadick · 27/10/2022 09:05

Not sure about a Chemist.

You can order prescription only drugs for a cat on the internet cheaper than purchasing through the Vet.

Laiste · 27/10/2022 09:06

That's what i thought.

They are talking bollocks. NHS Prescription charges only apply to humans.

kedavra · 27/10/2022 09:06

If they have it in stock. We paid £30 for a repeat prescription and ordered the meds from an online pet pharmacy for £75 rather than the £300 the vet wanted.

You can pay for a private prescription. Dont know if an actual chemist would fill it for you though. You can use them online though

AlicesAttic · 27/10/2022 09:07

Not a high street human pharmacy. But there are online veterinary pharmacies which are cheaper (but more hassle) than buying medication direct from the vet.

ChicaneOvenchips · 27/10/2022 09:07

I recently started doing this as my pet uses a medicine every day for the rest of her life. At my vet it's £30 for the prescription which covers 3 months. Upload the prescription online and order the medication from the online vet chemist. Much cheaper.

Shortname · 27/10/2022 09:07

Surely that would only work for medicines that are also used by humans? My dog has had human eye drops before but I assume there are animal specific things that a pharmacy wouldnt have. Basically I don't know but am very interested.

LuckyLil · 27/10/2022 09:07

Doesn't it depend if the medication you need is actually something that gets prescribed for humans?

Eweknowwhat · 27/10/2022 09:07

Q Is it true you can take a vet's prescription to a normal chemist and save money?
A. No, it's bonkers.

MrsEricBana · 27/10/2022 09:07

I'm pretty sure they can't give you meds for non human use e.g. if you want piriton for your dog on case of bee sting on walk I think you have to say it's for you. Disclaimer: I have never done this!

Cavviesarethebest · 27/10/2022 09:07

Yep - I pay around £10 private prescription for my dog at the pharmacy- would be £250 at the vets

You mean if the online pharm has it in stock?

I take in the prescription from
my vet - they know it’s for. Dog

hesbeingabitofadick · 27/10/2022 09:08

That's the other thing...you need to pay for the prescription and then order online and pay for the meds, then wait for them to arrive.

It works with repeat meds as long as you're organised but for anything urgent you're still going to have to cough up at the Vet.

LuckyLil · 27/10/2022 09:09

You're not using a high street chemist for humans though which is what OP is asking.

Cavviesarethebest · 27/10/2022 09:09

I’ve done this at lord of different pharmacies -
never a problem

Cavviesarethebest · 27/10/2022 09:10

Have also done it irgently

it’s exactly like a human prescription

Sorry for typos - promise it’s not my dog typing

'Human' pharmacies? Like Boots?

Yes, you can request a written script to be emailed to an online pharmacy of your choice.
The big online pharmacies are able to some sell prescription only medicines for cheaper than many vets can order in at cost. This is because of the massive turnover they have.
We used to give out paper copies of prescriptions to clients but they get emailed directly now to prevent fraud.

GalactiCat · 27/10/2022 09:13

Vet Nurse here . You can use a high street chemist under the cascade system . Most people use an online animal pharmacy like viovet or animed though. You pay for a three month prescription and can get it in one hit or two repeats.
