To think it’s fine to drive uninsured if it’s just a short distance?

MourningEveryone · 26/10/2022 21:35

My car has a flat tyre. My dad wanted me to borrow my mum’s car to drive home in, rather than one of them having to give me a lift. I’m not insured to drive her car. However he says it would be fine as it’s only a very short distance.

I refused, saying this would be against the law. He’s now not speaking to me. AIBU?

Sorry - 10 mins to go through the form and pay.

MourningEveryone · 26/10/2022 21:57

Seriously though, not many cars carry spares these days.

? I know that’s why I said I didn’t know how old your car was. And a break down kit doesn’t have a spare tyre in it…were you thinking it did?

jetadore · 26/10/2022 22:01

Your dad’s right, It’s fine, ffs why are people so risk averse/paranoid, as a one off for a short trip the chances of getting pulled over/involved in an accident are tiny, it’s different to if you’re habitually going round uninsured.

FGSWhatNow · 26/10/2022 22:02

Bloody hell, I can't believe that 13% of people voted that you're being unreasonable! ConfusedConfusedConfused

Don't most accidents happen close to home? So the defence that "it's only a short journey" doesn't make sense. Your Dad's being an idiot.

KatieBell12 · 26/10/2022 22:02

Your dad is a prick

Err, it's illegal and if you had a crash, you've just fucked over an innocent party.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 26/10/2022 21:58

It takes about 10/15 minutes to go through and one of the options is to start now.

Ah brill thank you. Trouble is, there’s probably a question, ‘Have you ever had a policy cancelled?’ And if you answer yes, you’re immediately disqualified.

Your dad is a twat. He really needs to give his head a wobble. Why would he think it’s ok to do that?

Probably because of the thread title and the post not matching up.

Dibbydoos · 26/10/2022 22:05

You can move insurance between cars for short periods. I've done it several times. So you are def NOT being unreasonable.

I can't understand why people take risks like that. How much is your liberty worth? Mine's worth a lot more than a few quid!

TabithaTittlemouse · 26/10/2022 22:06

MourningEveryone · 26/10/2022 21:49

He says he does. But now I come to think of it, I’ve never actually seen it.

I think you’re being a bit ridiculous now. Sleep well little one.

MourningEveryone · 26/10/2022 22:06

Discovereads · 26/10/2022 21:49

Why didn’t you either change the tyre to the spare or use the fix a flat stuff that comes with the car? (Not sure how old your car is). You’d then be able to drive it home & to a garage for a new tyre.

Ah sorry, thought you meant stuff you can stick over it.

If you're over 25, your own insurance would cover you to drive another vehicle third party, so it's totally legal.

This is not always true. Mine doesn't. (Lloyd's!)

Temp insurance is available though and would be perfect for this situation. I've used it to get a new car home when I had problems switching my own insurance policy over.

I think the Op's title is misleading- I reckon people are saying she's being unreasonable based on that.

Fix a flat stuff went straight through it. The tyre is damaged.

Will get assistance tomorrow. It wasn’t urgent enough to call them out at 9pm at night.

Why not? Literally the point of paying for roadside assistance.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/10/2022 22:15

Yes your dad is an idiot: you can buy insurance by the hour if needed. I did when my dad injured his knee and I had to collect his car. Think it cost £10 For a Couple of hours. Set up in minutes.

Depends on your insurance, many allow you to drive other cars 3rd party, but mine does not. It used to be standard

Not always true. I used to think that and then realised it didn’t specifically say so in a new policy so I rang and asked and I wasn’t covered for anyone else even third party. I was over 25yo and had a clean licence and no claims.

Yeah I do get this argument.

Was just thinking of the worst case scenario and being banned from driving completely. We would realistically have to move as we live in an area where it would be extremely difficult to get around without a car. And it’s obviously a terrible time to di that.

mogsrus · 26/10/2022 22:23

My mate did this & nearly had a collision with another vehicle, it was a unidentified police vehicle , total distance about 2 miles. Why would you risk it? You never know who is on the car in front or behind.

QuebecBagnet · 26/10/2022 22:24

I bollocked DD’s 21yo boyfriend recently for driving her car. She’d felt unwell so he’d driven her car 5 miles home and he is not insured. I don’t think he’ll be doing it again when I’d spelt out the possible implications to the pair of them.

KatieBell12 · 26/10/2022 22:03

Err, it's illegal and if you had a crash, you've just fucked over an innocent party.

Err, OP described it as a very short distance, which I take to mean a few miles/less than 10mins drive, and at 9pm at night so, as a one-off, pretty low risk in the grand scheme of things. It’s not like doing it for weeks on end during rush hour.
