To think pregnancy eating isn’t all it’s cracked up to be?

I always assumed when i was pregnant I would be ravenously hungry, eating out all the time and having so many guilt free treats but instead I couldn’t keep anything down in the first trimester and now at 20 weeks I am not that hungry and having to eat so healthily otherwise I feel blocked up and in pain.

anyone else experience this?

I was looking forward to McDonald’s breakfasts, cake and chip shop dinners all the time but I’d be in agony!

No it's shit. I'm 35 weeks now and can only eat small meals because I get so full quickly and the acid reflux after eating most things is horrendous 😭

Tangled123 · 26/10/2022 14:52

This was me. I suffered massive food aversions so all I could manage for the first half of my pregnancy was peanuts and grapes. I felt so full the second half, and had so much heartburn, I couldn’t eat much then either.
Even after I gave birth, it took a while for my appetite to return to normal.

FourForYouGlenCocoYouGoGlenCoco · 26/10/2022 14:54

Why would pregnancy mean you can have ‘guilt-free treats’?

I don’t want to sound snarky, but pregnancy is really about trying to live as healthy a lifestyle as you can, to help you and your baby stay as healthy as possible e.g. eating well, exercising gently, and avoiding smoking and drinking.

I also think the eating for two thing while you’re pregnant is a bit of a myth. I think you’re doing it absolutely the right way by eating healthily and not over-eating. But if you want a treat, please do have one and try not to feel guilty about it!

Pregnancyfood · 26/10/2022 14:54

@Tangled123 good to know. Was your baby normal size? I have a scan in a few weeks so hopefully they are still growing - they are getting a lot of healthy food so that’s good!

I understand completely. I got awful acid reflux with both my pregnancies, especially my second. DD was quite high up in my belly so it felt like there was a pool of lava in my chest constantly, even a glass of water would trigger it by the end.
Hang in there, OP!

Piggieinthemiddle · 26/10/2022 14:55

Completely agree. Everything gives me indigestion, and I keep being told to eat healthily, make sure I get all my vitamins, cut out caffeine, refined carbs and sugar... I'm paranoid about everything I put in my mouth. And I miss a glass of wine with my dinner.

Wondershoe · 26/10/2022 14:56

You’re only meant to eat 200 calories extra a day so two bananas worth. I don’t think pregnancy is an excuse to eat shit - your baby’s health is the most important thing

Skiingwithgin · 26/10/2022 14:57

I didn’t know that was a thing? Is it?

i feel your pain re first trimester (well daily multiple vomiting episodes til 18 weeks so bir mire than first trimester), then I are normally save for a few additional chocolate bars or fruit. Never had any cravings, but missed a rare steak and charcuterie meat! And pate! And wine!

Skiingwithgin · 26/10/2022 14:58
  • bit more

damn aurocorrect

This.

I do know you’re not supposed to eat for two or binge junk food etc but I follow a few influencers that are pregnant and see them indulging in a big burger or desert and think there’s no way I could finish that and not be in pain whereas pre pregs, I could!

I gave birth 4 weeks ago and my appetite is all but gone. During my third trimester food just did not interest me as I was constantly distracted by how uncomfortable I was! I also didn't ever get any weird cravings which I was disappointed about!

SalviaOfficinalis · 26/10/2022 15:02

Yea it’s not fun. I used to get trapped wind that was just agony. And acid reflux.

And in the third trimester there was genuinely no room in my stomach for food - a low point was ordering dominos and only managing 2 slices. It did improve slightly when the baby moved down a bit.

HenryHenrietta · 26/10/2022 15:04

Yanbu

I had loads of food aversion and by the time they'd subsided I was too big to fit much in there! Couldn't even eat my Christmas dinner which I'm still a bit bitter about tbh. What a con 😆

Influencers lie about literally every single thing. Don’t take any advice or tips or anything from them.

Frogsalad · 26/10/2022 15:09

I voted YABU because there's no magical pregnancy fairy that makes McDonalds calorie free. Be glad you don't want all that shit so you're not putting on tons of excess weight that you'll probably regret later.

DullAndOvercast · 26/10/2022 15:13

I had morning sickness well into second trimester - and also from then had awful heartburn.

I ate much more healthily in first two pg also walked some really steep hills - in first pg I up lighter than pre pg - had 9lb baby which no-one suspected - second put little on and again large baby - third ate slightly poorer due to stress and money concerns and we'd move so flatter area - but only slightly heavier after pg - though she was in a more usual position not up under my ribs so heart wasn't as bad.

What got me was despite me being very focused and concerned at eating well - and struggling to keep stuff down - everyone around me seemed obsessed at telling me I what I could and couldn't eat - frequently wrong or base on very old odd ideas - and also telling me I'd end up fat and I didn't need to eat for two - even as I was clearly struggling to eat at all - and this continued post pg as I was bf - despite all evidence to contrary that my weight was fine.

Oddly most of the people hadn't care about my weight prior to pg - and some seemed to be going on their own pg experiences and regrets - and nothing to do with mine.

BeanCounterBabe · 26/10/2022 15:17

YABU because it’s hardly a secret that pregnancy can make you feel sick and give you heartburn. Influencers🙄

I was just saying this to dh last night. I got pregnant then had horrendous sickness for 5 months that lasted all day and night. Then finally it stopped!! And I had two weeks of eating normally and living my best little life until I got diagnosed with gestational diabetes and had to restrict all carbs and sugar. My new favourite game is telling my husband about all the amazing things I'm going to eat when baby arrives in a few weeks! It genuinely kills me inside a little when he sits down in the evening to watch a movie with a bag of crisps and sweets while I have a cup of tea. I've lost a full stone from the weight I was when I first got pregnant and I'm 35 weeks now. Will all be worth it in the end though!!

Why would you want to eat McD's?

Eat loads of lovely healthy foods, salmon and salads and fruit. You'll feel much better

Pregnancyfood · 26/10/2022 15:24

@BeanCounterBabe i don’t have heartburn and don’t remember writing that I did?

I just have no appetite.

I forgot how judgy MN could be about not only eating massive salads. I’m not looking to binge or eat for two - just to eat normally with some extra treats and not have to be so rigid about it.

OP posts:
Fluffygreenslippers · 26/10/2022 15:26

I couldn’t eat anything in pregnancy. I had horrific acid reflux that nothing helped. I pretty much lived off ready salted crisps. I don’t think I could ever eat them again.

AliceW25 · 26/10/2022 15:27

I'm the same. Prepregnancy I would hear my friends talking about how they were starving all the time, eating two lunches etc. It sounded great. And I was looking forward to being able to fill out a bit and call it pregnancy weight! How naive. Little did I know I would be sick until 20 weeks.

Well salmon is one of my go-to 'healthy' dinners, but I've been told I should limit oily fish to two portions a week, so I won't be eating loads of it.
