How much do you have in easy access savings compared to your monthly outgoings?

I thought I wasn’t doing too bad for savings but if I thought about covering 3 months expenses I actually don’t have anywhere near.

AIBU to think not a lot of people really have months of expenses in an easy access account, particularly in a time of 10% inflation?

How much savings do you have available?

About £125k but it will be paid straight off mortgage when we move.

Agree, but what made you come here to discover that it’s not all “mum/parent/child” discussion in the first place? Genuinely curious.

Not wanting to detract from the OP's thread but if you Google just about anything, particularly about cleaning or similar, Mumsnet will almost invariably appear in the first ten hits.

As I say, I was looking for a way to stop my washing machine being stinky.

Then you get sucked in by all the stuff that is very much not about children or parenting, such as finance, DIY, feminism, style & beauty, politics, books, women talking about stuff that matters to them...

One of the many reasons (I would imagine) that there are a lot of CF / childless women on MN is that it's so rare to find a space on the internet that isn't dominated by men.

Sorry, OP, back to the topic on hand.

@Anonymouslyposting i know what you mean, even one of us lost our job we wouldn’t want to pull DC out of nursery if it could at all be avoided!

18 months of my PT wage, or 9 months household outgoings. We've only recently bothered putting the rest into ISAs etc.

This is one of the threads where I feel like I'm in a twilight zone....everyone on mumsnet is always talking about having no money and poverty, cost of living crisis etc. this couldn't be further from the reality....??

I've got nothing in savings.

thelobsterquadrille · 26/10/2022 18:45

Between us, we have around 8k.

That's because it feels a bit insensitive going on the cost of living threads and saying "I'm ok for now." Like the "What can't you afford?" thread - someone posted they can't afford all-inclusive on their next holiday.

There are plenty of mumsnetters who have recently got new jobs, had payrises, or their kids have started school so no more nursery bill.

I mean people obviously have a lot more squirrelled away that I realised in real life, not that everyone on here is lying - don't think I was particularly clear there!

Metabigot · 26/10/2022 18:56

About 4k. Keep getting it up then need to get some out which I suppose isn't very good saving but better than zilch. I put £250 a month in although should aim for more.

FrownedUpon · 26/10/2022 19:00

Over 50k in S&S ISA & premium bonds. It isn’t ‘locked away’, so I can get at either within a few days if needed.

Apparently the average savings are something over 6k.

Some people were always saving something. I started saving as soon as I came even on £4.50 an hour because I needed funds to go abroad of required quickly and cover my bills here meanwhile. I just continued it.

Some can't save these sums, some save more. This is a very small thread so it will not be fully representative of whole uk

Zero just keeping our heads above water

Pinetreesfall · 27/10/2022 00:52

£4.16! Woo!

MavisChunch29 · 27/10/2022 10:02

So am I, but recruitment processes take a long time

Not in my line of work they don't. I've never had a gap of not working unless it was planned.

neighboursmustliveon · 27/10/2022 14:27

We have about £7,500 in savings total. Just in one easy access savings account.

We are in a point of our lives finally where we save up to £500 some months, not all. In expensive months ie Aug when we had a holiday and dats out we didn't save anything but also didn't dip into savings or use credit and where in past years we would have done.
