Aibu to not take kids to fireworks display?

Pre covid we used to attend our local firework display in our town. Since covid it hasn't happened. Last year we went to the next town over and paid 26 quid to park and millions of pounds on a hog roast after queueing for ages. If we'd gotten the bus then we would have to wait ages to get back as they were all full.

This year the local one is not on again. I can't be arsed to travel to anywhere else. Kids are 7 and 10. Am I robbing them of an important rite of passage should I just save the cash and watch all the fireworks out of the window?

Well obviously kids want to go!
Our house is on a hill and overlooks several towns, we can see everyone's fireworks. Might get sparklers too and hot dogs. Kids will get over it, they get other outings.

That sounds amazing! Maybe do a bonfire, toast marshmallows, play with sparklers and order in pizza.

We’ve been to 3 displays in 9 yrs, I don’t wanna make it some annual family tradition when it’s mostly not so good round here.

So what was your AIBU?

Then why ask on here then? 😂

@FlissyPaps haha! I only came to this conclusion after starting this thread!

@Conkersareback I was sort of asking if I was being a meanieboots to not take them. The consensus seems to be not, so this has helped me make up my mind to not bother.

I think it's really mean! You could dial down the cost and so what if it takes a long time, what would you be doing otherwise?

But it's up to you and in a very short space of time, you've decided.

Conkersareback · 25/10/2022 19:47

@KindergartenKop I don't think most people are saying don't go, you e got selective reading issues.

Our house is similarly positioned to yours (also fantastic midnight at New Year!), so we don't see the need to go to organised displays. Make the hotdogs, crack out the sparklers, stay up late, and enjoy being relatively comfortable for it!
