Show me your white walls…

So I’ve been decorating the dining room, I did Dulux Polished Pebble on the fireplace wall and I’m 2 walls in to putting Dulux Rock Salt on the other walls. Don’t ask me why but I didn’t think Rock Salt would be so white. I’m debating whether to start again with something else as I’ve never had white walls.

would anyone care to share their white walls to show how they make it work without looking like a blank canvas. Or any tips?

We are having our whole house refurbished and plan to paint every wall Wimborne white. However we have chosen luxurious and intensely coloured fabric for curtains/blinds/rugs and other soft furnishings and we have a huge number of paintings and vases etc which will all add colour. What other colours and fabrics are you using in the room? Maybe you just need to soften the white with all the other things in the room?

You'll be better off looking on Pinterest as room shapes, lighting etc will all make the colour look different.

I think white is a very particular taste and takes getting used to.

I’ve a friend whose house was the ubiquitous grey when she bought it, she’s just done one room all white and has decided she is doing the whole house white, and the colour will come from the soft furnishings.

it’s really really not to my taste at all and looks quite cold and harsh to me, I like soft muted colours, greens, oyster etc and dark blues etc she loves it she says

part of me thinks she’s doing it as it’s cheap and easy to do, she doesn’t need 5o cut into the ceiling, can buy gallons of it cheaply, and because she finds picking colour really difficult, she’s definitely not adventurous and usually paints everything mushroom.

personally I’d finish it and live with it a couple of weeks then repaint if you still can’t adjust.

I won't post a picture as I'm not home but ny bedroom walls are white except for a feature wall. It gives it a pop of colour whilst still being calming and minimalistic.

We're exactly the same. Classic new build but I quite like it.

I think it's difficult as I always find that professional photos of other houses look great. Stylish and contemporary. But whilst we have a modern house with reasonable furnishings, it never looks quite the same.

TokenGinger · 24/10/2022 15:06

I don't have any photos (or white walls) but we did polished pebble in our living room for the media wall and had the other walls white but it was so close to white as it's so pale anyway, we painted the rest polished pebble x

mamabear715 · 24/10/2022 15:34

My mum had all the house white walls when I was growing up. I hated it & said I would never have it! Always stuck to the dreaded magnolia which most folk hate, lol, but it's much warmer, & goes with new houses & older ones too.

Second Dulux post today…

Anonnnnnnm · 24/10/2022 15:36

Just do what I did and do the whole house in polished pebble. It is the best colour ever after all 🤣🤣

Elvira2000 · 24/10/2022 15:39

We have mostly white walls, with one wall of colour or wallpaper. We have loads of pictures, plants and shelves to add character (or add a jumbule sale vibe 😊). We love it.

Thanks for all the replies, really helpful.

for those offended that I posted in AIBU - sorry, I didn’t know there was a DIY thread but I know for next time 😊

White walls can give a fantastic backdrop to colour.

I’m currently in the process of returning my walls to white after going a bit nuts like a farrow and ball catalogue on steroids. I put it down to boredom in lockdown! I think our house could take the colours but I have a lot of art work and just find the white backdrop more clean and calming. I grew up in a house with white walls so that think that’s part of it for me.

Stath · 24/10/2022 19:46

As long as you have pictures, books, plants and textiles then your white walls won’t feel dull.

Our whole house is white but we have lots of colourful art work, ornaments and furniture. I love how light and bright it makes everything feel. We have a naturally quite dark 30s house with lots of original floorboard and tiles to add texture and interest- I don't think it works as well in a new house as it can seem a bit soulless.

Chazx · 24/10/2022 23:21

When we moved in, we had deep cream walls, almost buttery yellow. Painted pure white everywhere . Once you add plants, wood accents, soft furnishings etc it really is very clean , bright and calming even with all the day to day clutter in rooms. I love white walls. 👍
