Hairdressers shouldn't be allowed to charge women more

I've just moved to a new area, looked at the price list for the local hairdresser. It's £20 for men and £38 for women! This seems pretty common. My husband has long hair and is quite particular about how he wants his layers etc to be. My hair is the same sort of length as his and I give much less of a crap about what it looks like. I have to pay nearly twice as much as him for a haircut so it's just a Woman Tax and discriminatory. Should it not be based on hair length or something?

has she actually gone in with a long haired man and asked?

You simply don't have to use places that charge like this. Other hairdressers are available. And this is surely not news to anyone?

Nonsense. All hairdressers in UK charge
more to women even where the cut a man has is the same. OP can’t just vote with her feet and go somewhere that doesn’t do that when they all do it.

Yanbu OP, it’s direct sex discrimination and thus illegal. Sucks eh.

Except a lot of posters have shared alternative options and at the moment we don't know that the OP and her other half are actually asking for the same product/service at the same salon.

There is a huge difference in doing, say, roots & a cut and dry, and giving a chap a short back and sides (or whatever it is they do these days). I am going to assume that if a man wants something more complicated that takes more time, materials and experience, he is also charged accordingly?

There is no difference between giving a man a short back and sides (£20) and giving a woman a short back and sides (£38). If men are being charged “from £20” but actually being charged £38 sometimes then women should be charge “from £20” too. That said, I go to Easy Barber which has the mens and womens different prices in the window in foot high letters and I’ve always been charged the mens price. I am a very obvious woman with short hair.

Whizzi24 · 24/10/2022 15:59

We have a mobile hairdresser. My long hair takes 5 minutes to trim. Dh's short hair takes 15 minutes with clippers and scissors and his is half the price. I've never understood it but it's the same everywhere so not like you can shop around.

Ponderingwindow · 24/10/2022 16:10

It’s rare to see it listed as men’s and women’s anymore because styles can vary so much. Even with my long hair, I have been charged the lowest price when all I wanted was a very quick, dry trim.

Get over yourself!
Do you expect hairdressing rates to be set by some kind of government commission?

Hairdressers can charge exactly what rate they want.
Customers can either choose to pay that rate, or go elsewhere.

KettrickenSmiled · 24/10/2022 16:15

OP, what do you feel about 'classy' restaurants charging more for food than standard chain outlets?
It's all only food! Shouldn't their charges just be based on how long it takes to cook each item?

OneTC · 24/10/2022 16:17

All the ones I've been to say "from £x" and do charge by complexity

Alaimo · 24/10/2022 16:30

Where I live (not UK) mens and womens haircuts tend to be quite similarly priced. This means that I still pay as much as in the UK but now my husband pays 3x more than before...

Tbh I think £38 is reasonable for the haircuts most women want. £20 for a 10 minute buzz cut is a lot.

But I agree with the principle, same cut same price.

antigome · 24/10/2022 17:06

I'd have thought the hairdresser would be cursing your husband and wishing she could charge ladies price (I would)

FunkyraspberryRipple · 06/11/2022 13:24

It Infuriates me!!!! Same salon for men and women, same hairstylists but different prices for men?!?! Sexism as far as I'm concerned!

Felix125 · 08/11/2022 11:28

FunkyraspberryRipple
Are they offering the same hair cut/style at different prices?

So (as a male), I normally have a number 2 blade all over and it costs £5
Do they offer the same hair cut for females at a different price?

Thelnebriati · 08/11/2022 11:42

I'll never understand why hairdressers can charge women more but car insurance companies aren't allowed to charge us less based on actual risk.

Felix125 · 08/11/2022 11:50

Is it down to what is actually being done.
To shave someones head should be the same price, regardless of what sex you are

But if the cut is more involved than that, should it be more expensive?

Halli2020 · 10/12/2022 14:09

Well that's where the hairdressing business is mainly with woman. Woman can often need colouring, bleaching, blow drying, conditioning treatments, the list goes on and a man usually has the standard buzz cut. Unless they have long hair like you mentioned. But that's usually where the business is, with the woman

antigome · 19/12/2022 14:14

I cut both sexes hair however as a barber I cut accordingly (squarer and less traditionally feminine) that said I have loads of ladies who comes for a trim and I charge the same as the blokes. That said-there are in and out in the same time, no hair wash etc.
I'd imagine if you go to a more generally ladies salon the time slots are longer, have a hair wash etc. a blokes haircut will typically be shorter in time in the diary. Plus the stylist will be a trained hairdresser rather than barber so will have relevant expertises st
