To think it's selfish to have an outdoors cat if you live on a busy road?

TW about dad passing of pets

I have a 40 min commute to work and drive for 4 miles along a wide country lane with a 40mph limit.

There are houses either side that are set back from the road a little more than normal with big drives or fronts.

This is a busy commuter road and unlit at night.

For the 3rd time this year there has been a dead cat along this road on my way in. It absolutely crushes me each time.

Twice I've stopped as they've been laid on the grass verges on the edge having obviously made it the rest of the way over before passing away. I've rung the number on the collar twice. Once left a message and the other time got through to a very distressed owner a few doors down who cried that this was her second cat lost to the road.

I have had dogs and cats and part of my decision making for both is where we live (along with all the usual things to discuss). If I lived on a busy road there is simply no way I'd get a cat that roamed outdoors.

AIBU to think it's a bit selfish to get a cat if this was where you lived? (Obviously different if you move there with a cat already in the home)
