To ask for your help in finding the thing that is beeping every hour

Something in our house is beeping. It started about a fortnight ago and I’ve been turning off anything that might beep, like the oven, microwave or tumble drier to see if we can still hear it. I’ve discovered it beeps at ten past every hour, so this made me think it’s something with a clock. It is one electronic sounding beep, then nothing until the next hour. It is hard to localise but is definitely downstairs. Ive replaced the batteries in the two smoke alarms we have and it made no difference.

We have an intruder alarm, but there are no error messages on it. The freezer doesn’t have a clock, nor does the fridge.

What would beep once an hour and why?

Also, our new shower beeps.

This is like Rise of the Machines

My friend's hair straighteners beep when she forgets to unplug them.

Asher33 · 24/10/2022 11:55

Are you sure it's not something outside? Something kept beeping a while back and I couldn't find the source of this noise. It was something outside.

Someone is winding you up Op.

It'll be something like this www.amazon.co.uk/QHHQ-Hidden-Annoying-Multiple-Cricket/dp/B0B4K63N31

I've just been listening to 'Your Own Backyard' podcast and there was a beeping at 4:20am every morning outside someone's bedroom window... they think it could be the body of the missing woman that was buried there still wearing her old wrist watch. The thought of that has really creeped me out!

Smoke alarm might need replacing. This is what happened with mine when it was faulty. How old are they? They might still be under warranty.

ohforthelife · 24/10/2022 12:42

Can't you sit next to each smoke alarm at ten past the hour to see if it's that?

lanthanum · 24/10/2022 13:01

Smoke alarm backup battery - and that probably means the smoke alarm is old enough to need replacing.

Oh my this is so annoying, I have a mystery vibrating sound in the bedroom, you know when you have your phone on silent kind of vibrating sound when you get a message or an update.

All old phones would be dead by now and our phones are downstairs during the night so I have no idea what it could be, doesn't help my insomnia one bit

Do you have neighbours? I can hear my neighbour’s phone vibrate if it’s on a table.

Thanks everyone. I’m working my way through all these ideas. Can confirm no dead plumber in loft and no dead body with digital watch on outside.

I had this, a few years ago now, and it was an old pedometer that was in a cupboard...

Littlewhitecat · 24/10/2022 13:29

I had this year's ago and it turned out to be one of the kids books that has buttons you could press to make some effects (I think it was Spots Noisy Farm!). It made really loud random beeping noises but took me ages to work out what it was.

THANK YOU. It was my DD’s stopwatch that I didn’t know she had. It’s a cheap one, bought a couple of weeks with pocket money and left in the kitchen under a recipe book by the microwave. Older DC is doing food tech and uses that recipe book so it’s been left out. DD had forgotten about the stopwatch. I kept unplugging the microwave as it seemed to come from there. The time was incorrectly set, it was meant to beep on the hour. No idea how to unset the bleeping stopwatch but at least I know what it is. Very grateful to you Mumsnet.

I suggest removing the battery and putting it back. This should clear the instruction to beep.

OpheliaPlum · 27/10/2022 13:56

It did! Thank you.
