Baby's and humidifier!

Really sorry but not aibu, just need help!

Babies (just over 1 month old) keep getting snuffly/snorting while lying down, it only seems to affect them most at night (typical!)

I've been looking into getting a humidifier to help ease the congestion, but has anyone used these and can you tell me how long it took to work?
I've been trying saline solution up the nose but it doesn't seem to be helping! And I've read it's best not to over do it as I can irritate the nasel passages the more frequent you do it! They are tiny babies (premature) so If anyone has any tips pleeeaaasee let me know!!

(I've also tried a wet towel on the radiator but that doesn't seem to be helping either 😖)

Diffuser with baby vapour oil is what I use

jevoudrais · 24/10/2022 07:02

I use a humidifier with olbas oil in and it works within the hour it is turned on. Used it when DD was 3MO originally.

You can try propping the cot up slightly so the baby's head is higher - this helps a bit with congestion IME.

CornedBeef451 · 24/10/2022 08:24

I always used to prop the cot up and use a plug in of some sort, maybe an olbas oil one?

Congratulations on your twins!

It is fairly normal for newborns to be quite snorty lying down, as the cartilage in the nose and throat is still very soft.

snoodles · 24/10/2022 08:33

We have one, it's great. We keep the window slightly open too. At that age it's a good idea to raise the cot slightly but humidifier is perfect. Just have to make sure you ventilate the room after!

You don't need a humidifier or saline or anything like that - being snuffly and snorty when lying on their backs in a deep sleep is 100% normal for babies.

Pixnix · 24/10/2022 09:24

The preemie grunt ... Grin

It is quite normal for them to be noisy sleepers but if you're worried speak to your GP. It can be a sign of silent reflux or a few other things.

Don't raise their cot unless you've been advised by a healthcare professional to do so, and don't use saline solution/suction bulbs unless there's thick mucous that requires shifting.

snowflake29 · 24/10/2022 09:53

Yeah it's very normal, most newborns are noisy sleepers. I always panicked that mine were choking, I couldn't believe the noises they were making! They do grow out of it and it doesn't mean anything is wrong.

Exactly. I'd be leaping out of my bed to check when the noises got bad at night. And then leaping out even quicker when he went quiet....

Congrats on your twins!!

My boy is the same - not a preemie but was an emergency c-section so he was born really congested and sniffly, and still is now a tad at 3 months 😁

Like PPs, I use a humidifier with baby olbas in at night and if he’s really bunged up I use a calpol vapour plug-in - though that’s from 3 months I think (as with most vapour stuff!) so probably no use to you yet! When he was younger I’d use a saline spray when he first woke up and then just before bed. Asda have a Little Angels vapour bath too which is great!

First time mum too so I get the panic - I still sometimes sleep with my hand on his chest! X
