Is changing a tyre noisy?

Howdoisawwithnosaw · 23/10/2022 20:03

Posting in AIBU for traffic.

Im supposed to be having someone round in about 10 minutes to change my cars tyres.

my daughters room is very close to where my car is parked, she’s come down very suddenly with a fever and had to go to bed. She clearly really needs to sleep but I do t have anywhere else I can put the car while they change the tyres, unless I drive to a carpark about 10 minutes away and stand around in the rain while they do it. If they’re even ok with meeting somewhere else.

so, weird question for AIBU I know, but does anyone know how noisy it is when tyres get changed? Is there much knocking and banging etc? I really hope it’s a quietish job, I can’t really afford to cancel. Don’t know what to do.

The noisiest part will be them using the hydraulics to whizz them on and off

I was going to say it depends on how much cursing you do, but if it's a professional with the right kit, I'd be surprised if she doesn't sleep through it. Hope she's well again soon.

Just about silent.

Put the car jack under the correct wheel
Undo the securing nuts
Jack the car up by hand
Take the flat tyre off, roll it away
Lift the new tyre onto the, 'prongs' tighten the securing nuts
Hand crank the car back to the ground

It can be noisy, the loudest bit is usually the 'pop' when they mount the tyre.

Badbadbunny · 23/10/2022 20:14

Virtually no noise if they do it manually (i.e. manual jack and hand wrench).

But if it's a garage/mechanic, there'll more likely be the noise of the "proper" jack and then the noise of the electric or compressed air powered wrench.

So, it depends really!

lljkk · 23/10/2022 20:17

yeah agree, the hydraulics only, and it's very fast. They are just noticeable not very loud, especially if outside. Inside a garage is a louder noise. Shouldn't wake her up.

I have changed my tyres by hand many times, and envy the power tool option.

Lol at hydraulics - as a PP said wheel nuts will generally be removed and tightened with an electric or air powered impact wrench. Either will be pretty loud. As for hydraulics - well a jack will likely be hydraulic but they aren't that noisy. Bead breaker and the changing machine might be noisy if not manual.

I think you may have missed what the OP was actually asking about.

I'm flabbergasted that people on here cannot differentiate between changing a wheel and changing a tyre...

Indeed

frankie001 · 23/10/2022 20:48

It’s noisy when I do it, but only because I forget to loosen wheel nuts before jacking car up. Insert loud swearing!

Fair point: which one does OP mean?
Coz most people won't differentiate, I reckon.
Last time I had a new tyre put on, they had to take the wheel off to do it, so the hydraulics-jack-nuts-swearing-gasping all applicable. Just the popping would be different.

My winter tyres stay on the steel rims & summer tyres stay on the Al rims, so for me swapping tyres meant swapping wheels.

I think you may have missed what the OP was actually asking about.

I was thinking the same.

Typically:

Air compressor whilst removing the nuts using the impact driver.
Loudish 'pop' when breaking the seal of the old tyre for removal.
Compressor when inflating the new tyre.

There will be some other noise as the tyre is coming off/on but whether this disturbs is another matter, especially if the house has double glazing. It's also dependent on what your daughter is sensitive to.

OP, you could ask the fitter to use a breaker bar to remove the nuts, if you're really worried and to close the van door when fitting. I'm sure they'll understand and will appreciate positive feedback when done.
