Ads during bake off - is it just me

Justonecat · 23/10/2022 19:24

Watching bake off with my children and there is an ad for something to help with vaginal pain and painful sex during menopause, the word sex is also displayed on the screen. Of course this prompted questions from
my younger children.

Is it just me or is it unnecessary to run this kind of advertising during a family friendly show? I just don’t fancy explaining what sex is to my young children during family movie night. There is a time for everything and in the middle of bake off is not it.

OP posts:

Back off doesn't finish until after 9pm (about 9.15) so some adverts are after the watershed.

Sorry, but I don't agree it's a family show aimed at families with young children, TV shows with a runtime of 1hr+ very rarely are. There's nothing wrong with kids watching it, but be prepared to explain some jokes or adverts!

BiasedBinding · 24/10/2022 08:11

The area near the coffee machine at my office is currently surrounded by leaflets about men having problems urinating and what they should do about it. Hasn’t put me off my coffee

Sirzy · 24/10/2022 08:15

The fact people are squimish about periods shows why adverts for period products and the likes should be normalised

Brefugee · 24/10/2022 08:15

Another example would be the period underwear ads which strive to normalise periods, with bloodstains on bed linen, a woman who has just finished masturbating on a bed. Most people would take care of these things in private, do we have to see this? Does it have to be normalised at all/in this way?

50% of the population have or will have or have had periods. the other 50% live among them. Normalising it, especially among boys, will lead to less misunderstanding and othering of girls who have to use those products. It isn't dirty or something to be hidden, it is a normal part of life for billions of us.

I've not seen the masturbating one, but i have seen the other sex-related ones. Brilliant stuff. Get people talking about these things and we'll all be happier.

But as pp pointed out, the show itself is full of innuendo and is at 8pm, so any kids watching should be old enough for these things.

The vaginal dryness add is always on during GMB it's not a water she's thing, same as the one for ED

Some of the comments on this thread......
My 5 year old has just started reading more confidently. If he doesn't understand a word he'll try and read it and ask about it.
He would definitely try and read the word sex if he saw it. He has absolutely zero idea what it means or if he would be saying it properly but he would ask. I know this off him!

Tbh I'd just brush it off though and change the subject as there's not a chance in hell I'm discussing sex with a 5 year old!

Ducksinthebath · 24/10/2022 08:48

Poor kids if it’s family movie night and they get to watch Bake Off.

Really? I would absolutely tell my children what it is in an age appropriate way if they asked

BiasedBinding · 24/10/2022 08:54

oh I’m getting sucked into the DM frothing nonsense. I don’t mind if my 4yo hears the word sex or asks what it is, I’ll tell them in an age appropriate way. I also don’t watch bake off with my children. Why am I even bothering with this

TerraNostra · 24/10/2022 08:58

There's a sanitary protection ad that features masturbation? Jeez that's grim.

peanutbutterontoast7 · 24/10/2022 09:26

@BiasedBinding yeah that's right. He's 5 he doesn't need to be talking or thinking about sex. He will learn all about it when he's old and mature enough.

That's just my opinion.

Interested to know what an age appropriate description of sex is to a 5 year old 🤷🏼‍♀️

BiasedBinding · 24/10/2022 09:48

Have they not ever asked how babies are made and how it gets into a woman’s uterus? Mine has at younger than that, I explained simply and matter of factly. Sex is just the name for it.

Nope he hasn't and if he did I wouldn't be talking to him about my uterus and sex! He would be absolutely clueless.

Totally fine if that's what you want to do but there's no way mine would understand any of that, far too emotionally immature and doesn't need to be thinking about that at his age!

If you have an emotionally immature child and an aversion to them knowing about basic biology and the functions of the human body then I’d suggest an age appropriate bedtime and cartoons, rather than keeping them up until after 8pm to watch a programme categorically not aimed at five year olds with advertising which will target the intended demographic.

peanutbutterontoast7 · 24/10/2022 10:28

@ComtesseDeSpair ermmm not sure what the point of your post here is? He doesn't watch bake off and even if he did I don't have a problem with the ads, as I already stated in my previous post 🙄

But erm thanks for the advice!

The word sex has never come up (though it wouldn’t bother me if it did), but when I was pregnant with my youngest, my eldest (aged 22mo when younger sibling was born) knew that the baby was in my uterus, they were very intrigued about it. No big deal.

I appear to have given your reading comprehension skills too much credit. I had assumed you would have at least read the title of the thread.

Ariela · 24/10/2022 10:37

I'm not sure what the OP is complaining about.

peanutbutterontoast7 · 24/10/2022 11:30

@ComtesseDeSpair

I think you need to read through the thread and my replies because you are not making any sense at all.
I did respond to the OP and then I responded to a following comment.

Also don't you concern yourself with my reading skills, they are perfectly fine. Maybe you should concern yourself with working on your own patronising attitude ☺️👍🏼

Flipping heck! This thread has become the Mumsnet version of "Do you bite your thumb at me Sir" from Romeo & Juliet Grin.

For some bizarre reason I think it’s screened at 9pm, if do the adverts will be for adults. I think it’s ridiculous and should obviously be screened at a family friendly time.

prisscalledwanda · 24/10/2022 21:37

They are probably targeted ads, do you have a smart tv or watch via on demand? No idea how you would un-target them though!

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 24/10/2022 21:39

YANBU - I absolutely hate the Simple (?!) one with their asses wriggling into the camera. After 9pm, no problem, but not during the family show.
