To ask Headteachers and SLTs is it really that bad?

Press since the start of term and now more recently has focussed on schools running out of money. Perhaps having to shorten days to cover outgoings. With more recent news of further austerity and I believe limited funding what do current HTs and members of SLTs think?

what is the solution if more money isn’t available? A lot of money is being swallowed by higher energy bills.

I remember going to.evening classes in schools in both 1983 and 1993 and to shows in them since. Money could also be saved by cutting out uniforms, ridiculous nonsense like PSHE (parents should be able to withdraw their kids from them ) and these extra posts- schools with several deputy and assistant heads. In my day - Head Deputy heads of sixth form middle school and junior school Boys school with 774 pupils. I'd have also thought that a school's maths and economics teachers could sort out the finances between them!

Not sure why your attendance at evening classes is relevant here. I do agree with the uniform - I have never understood the British fetish for school uniform, many other countries don't have it, and you don't get all the dire consequences that are prognisticated by their supporters. PSHE is not "ridiculous nonsense", it allows a wide range of things to be taught - I've often found opponents of PSHE to have some kind of religious or social agenda.

As regards "extra posts" - most schools operate now on minimal staffing - it's extremely inadvisable to have any more than a couple of staff out of the classroom full time. A one form entry school will be lucky to have a deputy head nowadays (an assistant head will do). Teachers have more than enough to do without getting them to manage the school's budget as well.

The cause of pregnancy and how to avoid it are fairly well known Just make sure condom machines and the morning after pill are available.

There are resources

Givenuptotally · 26/10/2022 10:42

Gosh, must have been imagining the highest teen pregnancy rates in Europe in the early 90s

This is only if children are educated by their parents about safe sex. Someone has to teach them. Many parents don’t so schools have to.

PSHE/RSE also teach consent and a lot of other important topics.

Is there any platform where we can actually tell Rishi/mps what is actually needed?

  1. SEN funding
  2. Social care funding

Actually, just those 2 would alleviate 90% of my stress

marktayloruk · 26/10/2022 23:26

I was only interested in one or two subjects so.I naturally oppose the whole Baccalaureate idea. Do it's unfortunate takers have any social lives?

PHSE isn’t just about sex education

In primary, it is overwhelmingly NOT about sex education. In the scheme we follow, only one half term out of six is about our bodies, puberty and (in later years) sex.
