YouTube Families

This is a light hearted post.

My 9yr old likes to watch you tube, mainly to watch other children do gymnastics, skate boarding or mountain biking. I enjoy watching bits with her too, and she has it on in the living room so if I’m doing something else I can keep an eye on the content.

Sometimes she goes down a YT rabbit hole, that I have to rein back in.

The rabbit hole content is usually those American families with the dolled up children and model like parents who like to do challenges and stuff.

I hate them! And I don’t know why! I think it’s because I think they give my daughter an unrealistic view of what families are like and often wonder if she thinks I’m really boring! I have told her that they are unrealistic and the families aren’t like this all of the time.

AIBU to feel threatened by these families? 🫣

I’m not a fan of the YouTube family vloggers because the children are unable to give informed consent to their lives being put online, and the parents often share far too much information about these kids.

It's the U.K. ones that worry me more!

That does unsettle me.

My dd is nearly 7
There's no way I'd allow her to watch hours if this rubbish
Just stop letting them watch it they're 9 not 19, your the parent!

I haven’t noticed the UK ones. She may well watch them but I zone in on the US ones more as the screeching/excitable tone really grates on me

These children don't really get to consent to being youtube influencers. Even if they do,they don't really understand what they are agreeing too.

I don't really approve of the families where the child is the main focus of the video.
