To ask if you have ever purchased from Costco?

I'm wondering if it's worth it to get a membership. I only want to buy a single item (a lamp) but started thinking a membership might be handy to buy food. However, I am a single person household in a flat so don't have much storage space.

I read in several newspapers that you can make an online purchase at Costco without a membership (non-members apparently have to pay an extra 5% as a delivery fee, which would be fine with me), but I can't for the life of me see how to do it... as soon as I attempt to check out it takes me to the membership page.

Any insights appreciated!

As far as I know its £15 for an online only account.Ive never heard of being able to buy without membership but I'm sure someone with more knowledge can rectify if I'm wrong 🤔

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 23/10/2022 12:15

We had an online only membership but swapped to full to be able to buy petrol.

Do you have friends/family that are existing members? They might be willing to get the lamp for you.

Bzzz · 23/10/2022 12:16

If you have your costco membership for less than 1 full year you can cancel the membership and get the membership fee refunded (or atleast that was always the case)

PinkiOcelot · 23/10/2022 12:18

I’ve got a card and to be honest, I can’t remember the last time I actually went. Not sure about online only. Wasn’t aware of that.

Crazykefir · 23/10/2022 12:21

Imo it's not worth shopping there imo, it's for catering and businesses. The platters are good for cooperate lunches however.
Whats this lamp like?

booboo24 · 23/10/2022 12:22

It's worth it for the fuel alone, at 17ppl cheaper at present that's £16 on a full tank saved each time for my u car! I live too far away to have one personally but my partner lives near one so every time I'm at his I fill up! Cakes are amazing too, and are great for kids parties.

Cushelle Toilet roll and huge boxes of Ariel washing powder are incredibly cheap compared to super markets - especially when they go on offer at Costco a couple of times a year

Their own brand (Kirkland) is very good quality on foil , bin bags, vitamins and dishwasher tablets .

Yorkshire teabags ,skippy peanut butter, Colgate toothpaste and ketchup are also on a regular list. We do have plenty of storage though

I also buy their pre-made chicken hotpot and beef stew with dumplings . They each freeze into 4 good size meals if you bulk out with a bag of frozen carrots and butternut squash

mamacattiva · 23/10/2022 12:43

We have membership but we’re a large family so buying in bulk works really well for us. The quality of most things is far superior to what you can get in the supermarket e.g. the tomatoes actually taste like tomatoes! The fuel is also much cheaper.

Lougle · 23/10/2022 12:55

We buy meat in bulk and then freeze it down into meal size portions (family of 5). The price isn't necessarily cheaper than, say, Tesco, but the quality is far superior so it's better value.

BaffledShopper · 23/10/2022 14:11

Thanks all! Great advice! I don't drive and there isn't actually a Costco in my town so I wouldn't be able to take advantage of the fuel savings. I am all for getting better quality on food though. I will look at the online membership — I didn't see that option on the membership page but will take another look. x x x x

Thank you @SlipperyLizard

I don't think there is much point in having a Costco membership if you live alone and have no storage, don't drive and don't live near a Costco

. Everything is enormous.

ToadSmall · 23/10/2022 23:42

Actually, I've bought things from Amazon that are dispatched from,Costco so that might be worth a look.

BaffledShopper · 24/10/2022 09:24

Thanks all! I just found out my sister in law has a membership! In another country but apparently the memberships are international. So hopefully she will place the order for me (she's a bit old-fashioned and afraid of online shopping).

I did see that option but there was a huge mark-up (something like £90 instead of £50).

I had a look on the groceries section of the website and there is no meat! What am I doing wrong?

Went yesterday for the 1st time ever
I saw some TVs that were reduced by £200 but you see that in every shops that sells TVs
I thought the food was far more expensive than my local Tesco or Morrisons
Ditto Wine and beer
Was looking for a hoodie - much less expensive options at JJD
I will not go back

Lougle · 24/10/2022 09:39

@BaffledShopper I've never ordered online... Perhaps they don't do fresh produce online.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 24/10/2022 09:47

I went last week. Family of 4. Filled the car up. Bought lots of meat and fish. Ate my way around the samples being offered. Spent £400 😳 Nearly had to get a second trolley, I was on my own.

ReformedWaywardTeen · 24/10/2022 09:54

I used to go to a similar one, it was before my business went under.

I wouldn't use it for individual shopping, no.

You will merrily be using the wand to out things in the trolley, think what a great deal you are getting, then they add the tax on at the end.

I find as a household that if you have an Iceland Warehouse, you can get big bags and boxes of all sorts food wise from there that works out far more economical. Or for non-food amazon is good too.

BaffledShopper · 24/10/2022 16:37

Ah, ok, that's good to know. Thanks all.
