to believe that this man should not be allowed to live at Student Halls?

At Cardiff University, one of the largest Halls of Residence, housing mostly first year students, is called Talybont.

At Talybont this year, a man (Sean Hughes) who has recently been released from prison for strangling a woman, has been given a live-in safeguarding role at the Halls.

His crime was to attack and strangle a young woman, and he is currently out on license after being released from prison in May of this year.

His role at the university is to live in the Halls of Residence as a ‘life assistant’, where his role is to “support vulnerable students and manage crisis situations”.

AIBU to think that this should not be allowed? How on earth have the application and vetting procedures at Cardiff University allowed this to happen?

What the actual fuck

Skinnermarink · 23/10/2022 10:51

Jesus Christ!!!
well, surely now the info is public and everyone knows what he looks like, it won’t actually happen??

Meatshake · 23/10/2022 10:52

Wtaf were they thinking

miceonabranch · 23/10/2022 10:53

Fox amongst the hens.

Ekátn · 23/10/2022 10:53

Why did anyone think this was ok?

JolieJ · 23/10/2022 10:54

What?!?? What messed up times we live in

Luckydip1 · 23/10/2022 10:56

This is horrendous.

Sep200024 · 23/10/2022 10:56

It has, sadly, already happened.

He has been living at the Halls since just before term started back on 26th Sept, and carrying out this role with all new and vulnerable students.

My son’s just gone off to Uni. I’d be horrified. I’d be even more horrified if this was my daughter, given the nature of his crime. I do believe in criminals rebuilding their lives, but this is not the type of job he should be in. Absolute no

summergone · 23/10/2022 10:56

Wtaf ! How has this possibly be allowed to happen ? The young women there must be terrified and their parents worried sick !

Theluggage15 · 23/10/2022 10:56

The absolute waffle from Cardiff University in their statement. They seem to have zero understanding of the problem and are going on about how he shouldn’t necessarily be barred from study.

AllPlayedOut · 23/10/2022 10:58

where his role is to “support vulnerable students and manage crisis situations”.

Presumably by strangling them?

itsgettingweird · 23/10/2022 10:58

How did he even pass an enhanced DBS to get this position.

I'm all for rehabilitation but there's rehabilitation into society and there's presenting them another possible victim in a plate.

NextPrimeMinister · 23/10/2022 10:59

I cant understand how he passed the dbs either?????

What can be done?

AltitudeCheck · 23/10/2022 10:59

Be given a 'life assistant ' role no way!! Surely anyone applying for any university post is subject to a DBS check and a violent crime would be an automatic no to a role involving vulnerable students?

Be allowed to live there? That's a little harder... Presumably other students convictions aren't checked /known when they apply to live in halls of residence or other housing?

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 23/10/2022 11:00

If my DD was a Cardiff uni I would be making my views very clear to them. What where they thinking in employing this man to this specific role. Madness.

IncompleteSenten · 23/10/2022 11:00

Just when you thought the world couldn't get any more fucking ridiculous there's a university going "hold my beer folks..."

Very few university posts require a DBS check.

I don’t think you need a DBS to work with 18+ unless they’re classed as vulnerable in the legal sense.
He’s exploiting a loophole, basically.

bellabasset · 23/10/2022 11:02

I thought the dbs check would have ruled this put unless he was put in post before it was done

Whinge · 23/10/2022 11:02

Chucklefuck · 23/10/2022 10:50

What the actual fuck

THIS 😲

It's absolutely disgusting that this has been allowed.

TheFairyCaravan · 23/10/2022 11:03

Wtaf?

And who the actual fuck has voted that YABU?

Johnsonsbabies · 23/10/2022 11:03

My DD went to an open day at Cardiff uni yesterday, and when she got back told me the student accommodation they were shown round was “horrible” and she didn’t want to go there.

This news is another reason not to apply.

BagpussBagpussOldFatFurryCatpuss · 23/10/2022 11:03

Obviously it should not be allowed.
His ‘staff’ profile has been removed from the University website and they are in the process of investigating.

Just highlighting again why background checks are so important. Ian Huntley sought out a position which brought him into contact with young people. As it says in the article "We know that perpetrators of violence against women and girls often seek out positions of power.”
