Tipping a hotel!

Checking out of a £200/night hotel here (I’m paying) and my mum asks me if I’ve enough cash for a tip. Is this a thing??? I know US is different, and you might leave £? In the room for cleaning staff but dropping a £30-50 to the lady checking you out is odd right?

Tip for the housemaid if you are staying several nights and even that is optional

Yeah you don't tip the person who happens to be on reception at the time of your departure

In the UK I usually leave £5 on the nightstand or dresser rather a percentage of the full bill. It’s rare for housekeepers in high end hotels to be paid any more than those in budget hotels, so the cost of the room doesn’t really come into it. Most people I know do the same, although not sure how widespread it is generally.

You don’t need to tip at all in UK hotels, and if you want to you leave something in the room so it goes to the housekeeping staff that have cleaned up after you and left your room nice.

Quite often that person will put it into a kitty that is shared amongst all staff once or twice a year. It's not just housekeeping staff that look after guests. You wouldn't even be there if it weren't for reception staff.

You wouldn't be anywhere if it weren't for the staff that do their jobs, and that's why they get paid wages.
