To think she's attention-seeking by "coming out" as anorexic?

Tess Holliday.

She's says she's happy with her size and feels comfortable in her own skin. More power to her. But I think she's either saying she's anorexic for attention (like many of her other claims) or is doing a Jameela Jamil and self-diagnosing herself and loudly telling everyone about it.

Or perhaps I just don't understand.

Tbh, I know about atypical anorexia but Tess cannot imho fit that profile either.

cakewench · 22/10/2022 11:27

I mean, I guess it's worked, because I hadn't seen her name for a couple of years until I saw your post about it!

TBH I think she's claimed this before. I have no idea if she is or isn't, but I don't think it's a recent thing..

AnApparitionQuipped · 22/10/2022 11:34

I hadn't heard of Tess or 'atypical anorexia' before but just read the article as it sounded interesting. From what she says of her eating habits, she clearly suffers from disordered eating, so in a sense the name that's attached to it is irrelevant.

FourTeaFallOut · 22/10/2022 11:37

I think after building a career through the modelling industry and the pressure to remain thin to meet the TV aesthetic, the line between the pathology of your industry and your own psychology with regards to disordered eating becomes a little blurred and hard to unpick.

She hasn't remained thin to meet a TV aesthetic, she in fact became famous for the exact opposite.

To be clear, she definitely has an eating disorder. But atypical anorexia? 🤔

Every time she has described her eating habits it’s been along the lines of BED (binge eating disorder). I’m not a qualified psychiatrist, but I can compare what she’s said about her eating habits to diagnostic criteria same as the next average Jane.

She’s actually over the years reported pressure to get bigger…not smaller.

she’s been diagnosed, why are you taking such issue with this?

I agree with this.

Tbh I have an issue with many obese "role models". When I was at my fattest and still smaller than them I used to be so envious of their lack of extra chins... Fucking lipo.
Or workouts. Yeah no.

It's very unhelpful to suggest anyone disclosing MH issues is 'attention seeking'. Tess Holliday is unlikely to read this thread but any number of people who are currently plucking up courage to speak to someone about their own eating disorder (or their drinking, self harm, depression, drug abuse etc) may see these kind of comments and assume they too won't be believed.

Sorry but there is a big difference between seeking confidential help and broadcasting a MH issue to the entire world on all your SM feeds.
Criticising the latter as “attention seeking” has nothing to do with the former.

Colourmeclear · 22/10/2022 11:57

As a recovered anorexic who saw and lost many wonderful people due to this illness at very differing weights who also had a positive body image despite nearly dying herself, I don't think a lot of people understand it.

FourTeaFallOut · 22/10/2022 11:57

Tess Daley is not Tess Holiday 🤦🏼‍♀️

Nosleepforthismum · 22/10/2022 12:00

Interesting article. I’d never heard of atypical anorexia before. In some ways I’m glad she’s confirming an eating disorder because I really hated the obese body positive image she was promoting. I’m all for diverse models of all different sizes but it’s truly ridiculous to aspire to be someone of her size.

Who are you to query her diagnosis

For me, I am someone who has been misdiagnosed with a MH condition I did not have. Diagnoses are not always correct. Nothing wrong with questioning a diagnosis.

RebeccaRose92 · 22/10/2022 12:12

Lol I think these things but don’t say them out loud

Yes your own diagnosis or family members but there's no need to start querying random celebrities.

The messaging to the person with mental health issues is the same though @Discovereads . That if they speak to someone about their eating disorder, the person they tell will think they are 'attention seeking'. Anorexia especially thrives with secrecy, which is why people saying they don't believe Tess Holliday (or anyone else) or they think she's just attention seeking has the potential to be very damaging .
Mind made a statement after Piers Morgan said he didn't believe Meghan Markle when she said she'd been suicidal, because they saw the damage it could to to others in an equally dark place.

I don’t agree with your opinion that the “messaging to the person with mental health issues is the same,” as I am one of those persons (I have a long list of mental health conditions).

We are quite capable of discerning the difference between seeking help confidentially versus broadcasting a diagnosis worldwide to the general public to further one’s celebrity status.

Why not? I’m not querying Tess Holliday. I’m discussing on an anonymous forum what she chose to make a subject of public knowledge & discussion. I’m not even tweeting her or commenting on her SM feeds. And as misdiagnoses do happen, there is nothing wrong with questioning whether this is also the case with her.

PinkArt · 22/10/2022 12:34

We aren't all the same though @Discovereads. My own mental health issues are things that I have sometimes felt able to share and at other times haven't remotely felt able to. Had I read something that said people talking about MH are attention seekers at a time I was trying to speak to someone to get help, I'd have kept things to myself for longer.
Yes, speaking to one close friend or a professional is not the same as making a social media post at all. But if you just hear that saying you have an eating disorders is attention seeking then a good number of people will be frightened into not doing any of the above.

kittensinthekitchen · 22/10/2022 12:36

What article are people discussing reading? Didn't Tess come out about an anorexia diagnosis eons ago?

Madamecastafiore · 22/10/2022 12:43

Significant weight loss yet being of a weight within normal limits.

Surely her weight is not within normal limits, she's morbidly obese.
