NC’d for this in case I'm asked for what the name is

DS(18)&his gf are expecting a baby boy in April, DS has told me the name that they've picked and I think it's cute for a baby, not so much an adult. It's a place, I didn't even know it was a baby name, but it is on baby name websites etc although it does come under a girls name.

WIBU to tell them I don't like it? Or keep quiet and hope they change their minds anyway?

One of the names that my DD was considering was likely to lead to a lot of stupid comments and people constantly singing a song at her child which would get really annoying.

I said the name was nice, but mentioned the teasing she might get. And it turned out that other people said the same. DD went for something else.

So yep, basically only say something if the name is genuinely going to cause the child issues.

Kayleigh ?
My friends daughter is a Kayleigh after the song.

Nevada Smith.
Pretty sure this was a character from a Harold Robbins’ book; possibly The Carpetbaggers. It’s been a long time since I’ve read it.
As PP have said, Steve McQueen played this character in the film version. (The book was quite brutal, tbh!)
I started reading this thread, thinking wtaf?? But now I’ve had some wine and I love it 😆

@EmilyGilmoresSass - My apologies - I am sorry if I offended you . I worded that very badly . It's a nice name & yes ancient and lovely . I know two little Freyas and at least one a couple of older ones. and they are lovely. You would probably not like my son's name so I do apologise - I suppose what I meant was I tried to avoid a name which was eg x no 1 x no 2 or X t and then X s at school . Trendy was an ill judged word I suppose I meant prevalent and nothing wrong with that. Jane , Anne , Tom etc etc all great names even if there are a few. Sorry - I did not mean to be judgey & I apologise

Basilisk x

Terrible but there’s nothing you can do except be overly enthusiastic so they want to rebel

crosstalk · 23/10/2022 21:26

I'd keep my beak out of the name. I would be sitting down with them asking what they are going to be living on and where, going through costs with them and helping them plan.

You are about to be a grandmother. This is just the start of learning to bite your tongue.

Especially as 'his' mother, know your place, way behind 'her' family and friends. Ceetainly don't get involved in any child care, it's their problem, at 18 he's an adult, despite the MN mantra, let them get on with it.

Egg and my face are in alignment - yes, there clearly are a number of boys' names that end in 'a'!

I still think there's probably a difference, though, between names that people are familiar with and unfamiliar/newly made up ones - and that people are still likely to assume that a name ending in 'a' is a girls' name, unless it's one they already know as a recognised boys' name.

Luca was hardly a recognised boys name in the U.K. 20 years ago and has now become really common!

They're going to call him Nevada, I've never heard of it as a baby name, and as I said in my OP it sounds more like a girls name

It's a terrible name but obviously don't tell them that.

SleeplessInEngland · 24/10/2022 11:14

People will just call him Nev, which probably isn't the effect they were going for.

@JudgeJ pardon?

I remember when I encountered my first male Luca. I was surprised, as I'd only ever heard Luca/Luka in the Suzanne Vega song and associated it with a female name. I think the one I met was from eastern Europe, where it is a common boys' name - but then Sasha, Nicola and Andrea are common male names across Europe, but no so much in the UK.
