To pick up an accent I was born and bred with in 2 days?

dh seems to think so

Have just got back from a weekend in newcastle where I was bought up. I was with all geordie mates, and obviously everyone we met was geordie and I have come back with a bit of a twang.

Unreasonably dh thinks its terrible and has just stormed off to bed shouting 'youve come back a different person, the best thing you can do is F off back there' !!!!!!

Charming

What a strange reaction. Silly man. It's natural for accents to change, especially if it's reverting back to an old accent. Does he think you always spoke with a Welsh accent?

When I went to uni my Mum says my accent changed to a "sing-song" accent as I picked up bits of so many other accents, it's still like that, but it's obvious when I've been back in Sheffield for a couple of days.

I remember when I was first living in halls of residence, there were people from Liverpool, Newcastle, Ireland, London, Lancashire, Sheffield, Italy, Sweden and Spain. For the first few days we were all struggling to understand each other. We'd just nod and grin, but gradually everyone's accent got softer and we could understand each other. Until half term and it all started again.
We got that used to not understanding what people were saying that we had "Pobol y Cwm" on in the background one day and no one realised for 20 minutes.

I read the title to your thread thinking 'oh yes my mother does that every time she goes back to her native town'
then opened the post and ha ha my mum is a geordie too!!

She moved away 55 years ago but one weekend in Wallsend and she's talking like Gazzer!!!

Alambil · 28/01/2008 01:01

He is being weird... I get an accent from spending an afternoon with people!!

BumperliciousIsOneHotMother · 28/01/2008 08:23

Bilblio I know what you mean about Pobol y Cwm! I went to Uni in N Wales for 5 years and often Welsh shows would come on S4C or on the Radio and I wouldn't notice for abbout half an hour. (Also try watching Fondue Rue y Deinosor [sp] when you are blind drunk! Weird!)

Emprexia · 28/01/2008 10:17

he's being daft, i think everyone is inclined to pick up an old accent while talking to family

DH does it with his welsh accent and i do it with my old brummy one.

Yummers · 28/01/2008 10:32

i think there must be more behind his outburst. is he usually a bit insecure? perhaps he fears there's a geordie bloke involved, not just your old friends??

i'm just trying to reason it out as someone who has been known to blow up at dp for the most seemingly bizarre reasons, but there's usually something i'm feeling insecure about that im afraid to admit to iyswim?

I dont know why he would be jealous or weird. Its not as if I havent been away before but agree his behaviour is totally over the top. I asked him to apologise this morning and he said 'no' and left the house without even giving me a kiss!!

So I'm in agreement with some of you who said the same as my geordie friend that I should keep it as long as possible although its fading fast. None of my friends really noticed today its just a bit of a twang

I think he may have reacted better had i come home with genital warts instead of an accent

Oh moss - I think he's having a bad day and you're just getting the brunt of it - you're not remotely weird - I have had 2 fairly strong accents in my life, Cornish and Welsh - I pick both up within minutes of speaking to someone and it's completely unconscious as I found out when speaking to someone from PHS in Cardiff - she actually asked me if I was taking the mick as I'd started mimicking her accent within a 2minute conversation

mosschops30 · 28/01/2008 15:13

lol wisteria

i'm pretty pissed off about it. Im not that fond of wales and am not welsh, so although i speak with a welsh accent its not my 'normal' accent IYKWIM so why shouldnt I revert back to the way i spoke for years. Its a very controlling attitude which isnt normally like him

Is he Welsh? Just thinking if he knows you're not that keen on Wales he may be a bit insecure at you wanting to go back to Geordie land possibly....?

I get irritated at mydp as, when he's really pissed or with his mates from uni, he speaks with a fake London accent and sounds dead chavvy - I wouldn't mind if he'd ever lived in London but it's completely affected and none of his friends are from Ldn either....so what's that all about then?

mosschops30 · 28/01/2008 15:50

i have been back before but not with fellow geordies so thats probably the difference.
The welsh thing is a bone of contention in our house so that maybe it I suppose

lovin the story of your dp lol

he is a twat but in my good books as he has just surprised me with a b'day present that (for a change) is rather good!

Wisteria · 28/01/2008 15:53

I know, when he gets home go 'all valleys'

"there you are my lovely, that's lush innit?"

over affected - will probably annoy him into saying something, cue big row and steamy love making session afterwards to 'make up'
