I'm sick as a dog with a head cold, so is DH and both DC's have headaches and fever. I've just dragged myself to Tesco's to get a shop so we don't have to surface for the weekend and the dreaded nanny state of U.K. has got me. I'm raging, I'm miserable and feel sick. 2 bottles of calpol and a box of cold & flu can't be bought together! Because apparently I'm going to kill us all! Sorry for the absolute drama just feeling very sorry for myself.

Why do you need 2 bottles of Calpol though? That is a lot!

Sorry you're feeling so poorly.

YellowTreeHouse · 21/10/2022 14:07

You can feel as sorry for yourself as much as you like, but this isn’t a nanny state.

A bottle of infant Calpol and a bottle of 6+ maybe?

DurhamDurham · 21/10/2022 14:07

Could you not just buy one big bottle of Calpol and your cold/flu tablets? My two are grown up now but I don't remember ever having to buy two bottles of Calpol at once.

Hope you feel better soon Flowers

DurhamDurham · 21/10/2022 14:08

Ah good point, although I'd just buy the usual pink bottle and then older child can either have that or the tablets.

greenacrylicpaint · 21/10/2022 14:11

in a shop amounts they are allowed to sell are limited. but a pharmacist might br able to give out more if they are satisfied with your request.

ThrowingSomeCrumbs · 21/10/2022 14:11

The reduction in the amount of paracetamol allowed to be sold has dramatically cut the number of paracetamol overdoses. It's a very good thing.

A pharmacist can over ride this in certain circumstances, so if you has asked to speak to them and explained they may have let you buy more. I take 6 paracetamol a day, so my pharmacist over rides it to let me buy 100 at a time.

bloodywhitecat · 21/10/2022 14:11

Me too @DurhamDurham I am quite happy to titrate the dose but not everyone is confident to do so (or is thinking straight if they are feeling crap themselves)

Ohjustboreoff · 21/10/2022 14:12

Yes. A bottle of normal and 6+ for my 9 year old. I've just popped my shopping in the car and then gone back in and bought more calpol. The original teller saw me but luckily didn't say anything.
For a family of 4 two items isn't enough unless you want to trawl the shops.
I've just got back from L.A too so I suppose remembering the high bottles of 1000 pills hasn't helped my mood.

It’s been like that for years but it is incredibly frustrating.

handmademitlove · 21/10/2022 14:18

Give your littler one a smaller dose of the 6+ calpol.. Or teach your 9yr old to take tablets.. Or go to a pharmacy where they can sell more of the same thing..

The rules, while frustrating, are designed to protect the vulnerable in our society. The rest of us can manage to work round this to support them.

ThrowingSomeCrumbs · 21/10/2022 14:20

There has been a 43% reduction in paracetamol overdoses. The problem is, they are very difficult to deal with, as there is often no immediate sign of problems, and when they do appear it's too late to do anything. A paracetamol overdose is a slow, panful death.

PinkButtercups · 21/10/2022 14:20

You know if your Tesco has a pharmacy you can buy a big bottle of calpol?

Also that's only limited to that shop 2 per customer. If you want into a shop next door you could buy another 2.

PinkButtercups · 21/10/2022 14:22

Went*

Notjusta · 21/10/2022 14:22

I know you've solved this now, but you need to go to a proper pharmacy counter, then you can buy more.

Ohjustboreoff · 21/10/2022 14:25

I understand what some people are saying about deaths from paracetamol overdoses but 99.9% of the population will only use what is required. Especially when it is obvious that the items are for different people.

ChocHotolate · 21/10/2022 14:25

I'm sorry this seems unfair to you, but this restriction has dramatically reduced the number over spontaneous overdoses seen in A&E

BrimFullOfAsher · 21/10/2022 14:31

Just get the 6+ and give the younger half the amount. And get your cold and flu plus

This.

Ohjustboreoff · 21/10/2022 14:44

When people take accidental overdoses it's not taking 3 different types of meds meant for different age groups. It would be nice to have a little common sense.

OP posts:
Sprogonthetyne · 21/10/2022 14:51

It is occasionally annoying, but for the lives saved worthwhile. Did mean I had to spend the last few weeks of my pregnancy stockpiling painkillers for after my c-section though.

ThrowingSomeCrumbs · 21/10/2022 15:01

So, for your convenience, you want the law changed that is protecting hundreds of teens each year from non accidental overdoses?

Your cold isn't life threatening.

Toddlerteaplease · 21/10/2022 15:02

Just buy the 6+ and halve the dose.

No, but if you make an exception for different age "levels" of medication, people will just go out and buy that if they want to take an overdose.

So the 43% reduction means nothing because you want to buy them all together? It's not all about you OP. It's about the bigger picture and wider impact.
