Alternatively, what's the most recommended musical or theatre play in London no and in the next 3-6 months? Will be taking Dn 13 and 10.

I always come out of the woodwork when I see threads about Hamilton. Absolutely love it and have seen it in theatre more times than is sane. 🙂 Agree that it’s fast-moving and more enjoyable when you’re already familiar with the music, so I’d recommend getting the soundtrack beforehand. Two of my children saw it when they were 10 - one hadn’t heard the soundtrack beforehand but loved it - and saved up to see it again the following year. The other new all the words before watching it and made sense of it through the performance. Family going to see it for the umpteenth time at Christmas.

Hamilton is amazing but with so many great shows I would take those ages to see wicked, back to the future, Matilda, the lion king, Mary Poppins etc

MuddlingThrough1724 · 22/10/2022 19:24

I saw it recently and it was fabulous. I am pregnant, which may explain me being emotiknal, but I was overcome with emotuon by the end as it was just so captivating, and it isnt like me at all to rwact that way! Absolutely amazing to see in person.

However, for kids those ages, if they don't have an idea of the story or aren't in to history, I'd maybe see something else. Six is also historical, but much shorter and also very funny (my 5 year old loved it despite some parts of the story being beyond her) - I'd describe more as a concert type show as is very music based. We combined with a tower of London trip and it went down well as a day out.

I'd also suggest the Lion King - yes, they will know the story, but the staging is really fantastic to see and I was amazed seeing it for the first time as an adult.

Musicals are I think quite personal. DS (just 10) LOVES Hamilton - we are seeing it for the 4th time on Thursday and 5th is booked for February - but it isnt something that you can go to cold.

Hadjab · 22/10/2022 22:11

I’ve seen Hamilton 5 times - yes, I am addicted!

MarshaBradyo · 22/10/2022 22:14

It pretty much ruined other musicals for me.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 22/10/2022 22:19

Hamilton is amazing.

ButterflyBiscuit · 22/10/2022 22:25

The narnia one is amazing! I took one of my children when it was on tour and would love to take my husband and older child as it was incredible in ways I hadn't realised it would be!

We are likely to see Come from Away at Xmas.

We liked six but only paid regional prices, also Fantastically great women was brilliant and perfect for those ages.

My 10 year old loved Hamilton but was already completely obsessed with the soundtrack before we booked tickets. From 'cold' I think there are better things for 10 year olds. But not Six. Six is total shite and a waste of time and money.
Agreed with other posters it depends what kind of things they like

Massively agree.

Six is shite and a massive waste of my money. It was for my birthday as well.

I love Hamilton but agree that you need to be already into it.

Wicked a good shout

H1Drangea · 22/10/2022 22:29

I saw Hamilton , I had no idea what was going on , liked it though ( we t for Dds 21st , cost a fortune )
Come from away , absolutely loved it , not sure whether a 13 yr old would though
DS ( 27 and not a theatre lover ) saw Back to the future with his Gf and enjoyed it
not sure if it’s still on , but might be worth a look

WaltzingWaters · 22/10/2022 22:29

It’s absolutely brilliant and definitely worth watching.

I was going to say Moulin Rouge is also incredible but probably rather too raunchy for 10 yo!

MumDadBingoBlueyy · 22/10/2022 22:36

Matilda, wicked, lion king, Les Mis, the play that goes wrong…All really good shows!

my favourite show I’ve seen recently was Frozen, but that was with 5yo DD. I’d happily go to see that again by myself!

Leakingroofagain · 22/10/2022 22:47

Hamilton is great but it's fast paced and tricky to follow for DC that age I'd say. My second favourite is Matilda. It's so good!

Smilelesstalkmore · 22/10/2022 22:51

Hamilton is an absolute masterpiece, and my kids love it, but I agree with others that for kids (and adults to an extent) it's better if they are already into the songs and storyline etc before going to see it live.

Usernamqwerty · 22/10/2022 22:56

Back to the Future! It's amazing 😀

rainbowzebra05 · 22/10/2022 22:58

Newsies is coming to the west end in December. The Broadway version's on Disney+ (I think, might be iplayer?) and it's fantastic. Much more suitable for the younger one than Hamilton, which is very wordy, has adult themes, and if you lose concentration it's difficult to pick back up again.

Whistlesandbell · 22/10/2022 23:01

I thought it was amazing, it was my kind of music.

CuteCillian · 22/10/2022 23:05

I think they would love it but, if you are not sure, another vote for Back to The Future.

Theluggage15 · 23/10/2022 00:10

I saw it on Friday. I really didn’t enjoy the first half, much preferred the second but it’s way too long when you’re sitting in uncomfortable theatre seats and I would put it low down on my list of favourite shows. I really don’t get the hype and I found the whooping when certain characters came on by people who obviously knew the play or had seen it before rather irritating.

Wicked is a great choice.

FrenchOnionShoeBox · 23/10/2022 00:23

Hamilton is great if you can get reasonably priced tickets.

Saw Come From Away I’m New York and really enjoyed it. Also relatively short. Not sure how much kids would enjoy it, but there’s nothing inappropriate.

thefemaleJoshLyman · 23/10/2022 00:26

Hamilton is amazing but it is long. Even my.12 yo musical obsessed DD struggled with the length. She LOVED Six, which was fab,
probably better for girls than boys (stereotyping there).

Ozgirl75 · 23/10/2022 00:27

Hamilton is amazing but I also had two obsessed boys who listened to the soundtrack dozens of times, read the book about it and generally asked a million questions before we went to see it, so they (and I) really understood what was going on before.
I also wept at the end - actually I cried a bit at quite a few bits, The Battle of Yorktown, the music is just so overwhelming that it brought me to tears. I’d probably cry at the Sistine Chapel though, I am quite moved by music especially.

leccybill · 23/10/2022 00:36

I'd say Matilda or Lion King.

I thought Wicked was shite - no real plot, and only one memorable song.
