so i went for eye test today one of questions i was was asked was if i had any health issues i said yes i was then asked what and was expected to say in the main area in front of customers which i wasnt happy about i then told the member of staff who saw me when they took me through to room for my test that that sort of question should be asked privatly not in a public space where everyone can listen in his responce was 'well nobody has to answer' but surely comon sense would say some health issues are personal and not for discussion in front of others that can be listening in does anybody else think its strange to ask personal questions like this in front of other customers

How bizarre. And for them to think it's ok.

AutumnCrow · 20/10/2022 23:03

Last time DP went to Specsavers this happened. He ended up cutting the conversation dead with 'no' answers. Really inappropriate.

LittleScottieDog · 20/10/2022 23:03

Well there are some medical issues that can affect the eyes as a secondary problem. But yes, they should be asking questions like that in private.

Lottieeshborn · 20/10/2022 23:04

Basic confidentiality really. I'm on chemo and would feel uncomfortable explaining that and why in front of people. So I completely agree it isn't appropriate.

that was my point ask dicreetly in private rather than in front of other customers the member of staff didnt think there was anything wrong with what he had done

I use Specsavers and they send me the health questionnaire in advance by email, so I complete that and then don’t get asked the questions at all while I’m there.

Ah I just lean in and say; look how deep you wanna dive on this one?
2/4 weeks I got vaginal dryness, the rest of the time I’m on super plus plus pads and the hot sweats and constipation get me bad. I did bring a stool sample just in case this came up tho, hold up while I find it, and I assume you want bloods? (Start rolling up sleeve)

oh you meant EYE issues. Sorry my love, you gotta be more discreet next time. 🙂

No 😂 seriously whenever I am greeted with a shitty receptionist my go to come back is always vaginas and poop. I swear they will never ask that way again!

EmmaH2022 · 20/10/2022 23:13

This happens a lot I find

I was asked the last time I asked for an OTC pharmacy product. Whole lunchtime queue would have heard answers.

masterofdoomv1 · 20/10/2022 23:14

In every pharmacy I been to there is a sign clearly stating that customers can ask for privacy.
Or you could have just said "I'd prefer to talk answer this more privately".

MarmiteCoriander · 21/10/2022 00:03

OP- I agree that @Windbeneathmybingowings has likely had a very similar issue. I really don't think they were mocking you at all!

I have never returned to specsavers for a similar reasons. Among a host of other issues- absolutely none of the staff said their name, nor what their role was or what they would be doing? Cleaner, admin, optician???

To be asking medical history in a public space is unacceptable IMO. Why can't it be asked with the optician in private???

CryCeratops · 21/10/2022 00:08

I guess there’s some health issues that can affect eyesight.

But they should be asking about it in private.

notdaddycool · 21/10/2022 00:28

If you are about to move into a private room for the eye test then of course the question should be delayed. Chemist is a bit different but they always have a sign to the private room, there I think asking is fine and I’ll say if I need the room.

Stigsmother · 21/10/2022 01:13

I go to Boots Opticians, there are many conditions and drugs that can affect your eyes, and they always take a thorough history.....
BUT, always privately in a consulting room.

Brilliant That made me chuckle.

OP you are quite right these questions should be discussed privately.

DahliaRose3 · 21/10/2022 01:21

When I go they ask me in private. Very poor attitude by that staff member. I would put in a complaint with the manager and escalate to head office. I f hate bad customer service.

Similarly, lack of privacy when you’re expected to answer very personal questions. This awful women at Boots where I live, not sure if she is hard of hearing or just plain rude - the latter I suspect from my experiences with her, very loudly announced to all of Boots - which vaginal products do you require for xyz…

knittingaddict · 21/10/2022 02:58

I've been asked this in Specsavers, but in the consulting room, not in the shop. Very unprofessional of them.
