To think it's common knowledge not to eat when you have a stomach bug

YABU - I keep on eating even if I'm sick
YANBU - who does that?! Plain toast only after 12hrs .

I really thought not eating for a long time after you were sick was the normal thing to do! I'll leave it at least 12hrs and then have some toast. But recently I was around my SIL when she caught the stomach bug that we'd all had in turn - she was shocked when I told her it wasn't a good idea to eat the takeaway we'd ordered and that she'd be better off having some toast!

DH also didn't realise that not eating is a thing and he wondered why when he came down with the stomach bug it lasted much longer for him than for me - errrr cause you were eating curry and an ice cream a couple of hours after you'd been sick!

Also the boy in a&e who was asking his grandma whether he should perhaps stop drinking fizzy drinks while his stomach was sore and she was saying she didn't know and he should ask the Dr.

So am I being unreasonable to think it's common knowledge to not eat when you've been sick?

YABU - eat what you like
YANBU - you need to rest your stomach

If I feel like eating and I can keep it down I eat what I fancy.

FarmerRefuted · 20/10/2022 22:31

NHS advice is to eat when you feel able to and states that you do not need to eat or avoid any specific foods. If you're going to throw up then you'll throw up regardless of what you eat so it's down to the individual and what they feel like eating.

Luredbyapomegranate · 20/10/2022 22:31

White rice is best I think, and also drinking the water the rice is cooked in

Otherwise yes white toast

I am surprised people don’t know that

RewildingAmbridge · 20/10/2022 22:32

The not eating at all can make me feel worse, I get an acidic sick feeling in my stomach even once I'm past the vomiting phase. Wouldn't be eating anything greasy/rich though, so toast etc maybe soup if I could face it, not a takeaway!

What water? There shouldn't be any left.

And as for food, the BRAT type diet is very outdated.

I just eat as normal, if I feel like it. If it’s going to come out then oh well. Doesn’t seem to do any harm, still recover OK whether I eat or not.

justasking111 · 20/10/2022 22:35

My GP advised 24 hours fasting. It's no worse than the prep before a colonoscopy and the bug dies off. Especially useful if it's a foreign lurgy.

I too thought everyone knew this

40andfit · 20/10/2022 22:35

Advice is to eat if your hungry and eat whatever you want. The BRAT diet was an American thing and they stopped advising that over 20 years ago.

If you have water left over when you've cooked rice then you're doing it wrong!

dementedpixie · 20/10/2022 22:37

There is no advice to stop eating
Eat if you feel like it but avoid fatty and spicy foods and fruit juices
Carb rich foods and soup is good

tigger1001 · 20/10/2022 22:38

I eat a little of what I fancy once my appetite comes back. Nothing too rich or greasy though but honestly that's not what I want then anyway.

dementedpixie · 20/10/2022 22:39

Not everyone uses the absorption method for cooking rice. Doesnt mean they are cooking it wrongly. I would never drink the rice water; sounds disgusting

MithrilCostsMore · 20/10/2022 22:41

Fizzy drinks can definitely help when you feel sick. Can't believe you didn't know that!

Cookerhood · 20/10/2022 22:41

Just eat what you feel comfortable with. Perhaps not a five course meal with wine & port.
I haven't had a sickness bug for about 20 years but I don't think I stopped eating when I did.

Kaffiene · 20/10/2022 22:42

Outdated advice. No evidence to back it up. Current advice is eat what you fancy when you are ready.

Wheredoallthepensgo · 20/10/2022 22:46

I haven't been sick for a long time but when I last was, I didn't fancy eating much for 24 hours, just had some mashed banana and later some soup I think.
Hubby always goes for scrambled eggs. Says it helps "bind him up" again.

I think light foods (not over spicy/greasy) are sensible as more easily absorbed and don't put a "strain" on your weakened system. No idea if that's medically correct but that's what I go with!

Definitely wouldnt have a major curry!

NoYouSirName · 20/10/2022 22:49

It’s not the recommended approach any more. Advice is to eat to appetite. And definitely keep drinking water even if it makes you sick, because some will still be retained and help prevent severe dehydration.

RonnieMcdonnie · 20/10/2022 22:50

normally wouldn’t fancy it but if I felt hungry I’d eat, never had an issue 🤷‍♀️

PickAChew · 20/10/2022 22:51

If you feel up to eating, then eat. It's regard as sensible to listen to your body on this one.

Darkstar4855 · 20/10/2022 22:52

I usually try and eat small frequent amounts of something soft like yoghurt, ice cream, soup etc. I find throwing up with an empty stomach so much more painful and there’s always the chance you’ll absorb some calories before it comes back up again.

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 20/10/2022 22:53

I eat whatever I fancy and can stomach when I am ill. I don't force myself to eat if I am not feeling it but if I am hungry I eat. Lack of nutrition and liquids when ill can only be a bad thing.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 20/10/2022 22:57

I've just had a nasty stomach bug. Couldn't have eaten if I tried. I never can. Water only. Weird that people can.
Had some toast after 24 hours and didnt even finish that. Mind you, I'm 6 days on and still feel sick every time I try to eat even though the vomiting has long finished. But that's unusual. I should be back to normal by now.

redbigbananafeet · 20/10/2022 22:58

I also have been distracted by the river water.

redbigbananafeet · 20/10/2022 22:58

*rice water!

That's my viewpoint too, if I'm going to vomit of rather something was there.
