To ask which cooking ingredients you would never use own brand for?

I buy own brand for about 80-85% of our weekly shop, but I switched from supermarket tinned tomatoes to a more expensive brand last year and I swear I'll never go back. I find that the difference in the end result is night and day, and the dearer ones go so much further with flavour. I'm a cheapskate with everything else though 😁

What product would you never cut corners with?

I've never heard of Jackson's bread. Is it a regional thing?

Local Hull company, available at all supermarkets round here.

Cicchetti · 19/10/2022 23:50

Ketchup
Greek yogurt

Dutchesss · 19/10/2022 23:53

Peanut butter, only sun pat will do. It's probably one of the only branded things I eat.

SirenSays · 19/10/2022 23:55

Soy sauce! It's ike salty puddle water

Clarabellasingsthisbit · 19/10/2022 23:56

Stork margarine for baking,always.
Ditto Green and Black's cocoa for chocolate cakes.

WMA · 20/10/2022 00:06

I used to only get own brand cereals as the price difference was crazy. But the supermarkets started to skimp on ingredients and in the end they all tasted like gross cardboard. So am now back to Kelloggs' etc.

(Also, tried to get my kids on other ketchups, but we've always gone back to Heinz...)

grannies thought so

Not fruity but had this and it’s fine. I suspect I’m just a pleb when it comes to food.

SocksAndTheCity · 20/10/2022 00:12

Fagé Greek yoghurt
Longley Farm for fruit yoghurt (I don't buy it otherwise)
Marmite
Paysan Breton cream cheese - Philadelphia is awful
Branston baked beans
Yorkshire tea
Lyle's golden syrup
Ritz crackers

The Aldi whole nut crunchy peanut butter is the best I've had in years, ditto their chocolate 😊

Bigslippers · 20/10/2022 00:19

Kelloggs Crunchy Nut Cornflakes
Branston Baked Beans
HP Sauce
Weetabix
Crisp and Dry Rapeseed Oil

Tried so many own store brands for above but they just doesn’t compare

Until last week it was also Heinz Tomato Soup but tried M&S brand.. it was so much better than Heinz without the bitter taste at the back of your throat and half the price

Cant beat a cheese sandwich with tomato soup!

Also next is not an ingredient but will only use Fairy liquid as it reminds me of my lovely late Grandma

followacrowforacrust · 20/10/2022 00:20

Coffee

QuietBatperson15 · 19/10/2022 22:07

Waffles! Got to be birdseye, although now they are double the price I did give own brand a go again recently- still nope!

I had been buying own brand but had to pay for birds eye when own brand was out of stock, OMG the difference was unreal the kids noticed and there was no wasted waffles. Will not go back to store brand.

Georgeandzippyzoo · 20/10/2022 00:45

Could probably have own brand for a lot of stuff but we have tested every local stores 'weetabix' and nope , sorry , have to have the brand.

Arenanewbie · 20/10/2022 00:46

Longley Farm full fat cottage cheese ( I would recognize it at any amount of blind tests)
Hellmans mayo
Lurpack or President for butter (non branded for baking)
Always branded yogurt
Rich teas and digestives have to be McVities
Baileys Original
Kellogg Special K red berries

Leakingroofagain · 19/10/2022 21:55

We've switched to basic ketchup and it's grim.

@Henddraig try Hellmans ketchup it's a 3rd of the price of Heinz and similar in taste.

Season0fTheWitch · 20/10/2022 01:03

Stock cubes (knorr only), mayo, coffee, ketchup, baked beans, tinned toms and cereals especially. I very rarely buy own brand anything, I'd rather spend more on good food

Nat6999 · 20/10/2022 01:03

PG Tips tea
Heinz Tomato ketchup
Schweppes Soda Water
Cravendale Milk
Daz Washing powder
Heinz Tomato Soup
Henderson's Relish

PerditaNitt · 20/10/2022 01:19

Mutti tinned tomatoes - very pricey but absolutely worth the money. Their tinned pizza sauce is also fab.

They don’t use citric acid in their tinned tomatoes (which means that it suits people with certain health conditions too). Although I just love them because they taste better than any other brands.

Bagpuss2022 · 20/10/2022 01:54

Vimto no other squash will do I go through a huge 3 litre one a week to myself it’s all I drink apart from wine don’t do tea/coffee

Pilgit · 20/10/2022 06:52

We've been trying things out to make sure we're not just buying a brand because it's the brand. Coffee - sticking with our normal brand and just drinking fewer cups
Ketchup - has to be heinz
Washing up liquid - fairy. Everything else seems to be shit and doesn't last
Beans - we tried but only heinz here
Butter - anchor all the way

But also found asda cheap cheese - fine. DC like the chocolate spread.

Wow, 30 litres of vimto a week (at the recommended ratio). That's two whole extra day's worth of calories just from vimto...

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 19/10/2022 22:25

Princes who make Napolina make most of the supermarket own brand stuff you know.

I don't care who makes it; I care that it tastes different!

Kualma · 20/10/2022 09:25

Gravy granules & sriracha sauce

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 20/10/2022 09:26

Own brand ketchup is universally vile. Apart from that I’m not too fussy

Lcb123 · 20/10/2022 09:27

Coffee and tea, for me, have to be specific brands (or at least, the posh stuff!). Apart from that I couldn't care less the brand, I've never noticed the difference.
