Is this sucking up to the teacher?

Dd, 4 keeps wanting to make things for her new teacher (first teacher)
I’m a teacher too (not taught since Dd was born) and I used to love receiving little things…but not sure if I look a bit of a twat/teachers pet bringing these things in all the time?
If you’re a teacher, what do you think of this? Do you find it sucking up/trying to get you to favour/like the child?

No teacher would ever think those things of a 4yo bringing in drawings for them.

Cantthinkofanewnameatm · 19/10/2022 21:20

Depends what it is but no, I wouldn’t be bothered.
Worst thing a child brought me was a dead bird. Apparently it was dead on their driveway, child said he wanted to bring it to school and his mum said ok. Waving hand, I’ve got something to show you, Miss, upturned bag and dead bird lying on a table of 5 kids, screams all round.
So cut outs of snowflakes, paper flowers, the odd picture is fine, just not dead birds. Not dead anything really.

I teach reception and love it!

Watchingloosewomenatnight · 19/10/2022 21:27

@BeautifulDragon I assumed that too, but was chatting to a couple of teacher friends I worked with and one said it definitely made them (sort of subconsciously) like the child more and the other said it made her a bit uncomfortable due to this. I just really thought it was lovely!🤷🏻‍♀️

I love getting little pictures/notes from the children I teach. Over the years I've kept particularly lovely ones in a box. Whenever I'm feeling particularly stressed from how shitty the job can be, I open the box and look at some to remind me why I do it!

FistFullOfRegrets · 19/10/2022 21:30

Of course not if the child has made it (even with help) & wants to. I'd love it.

LoveMyCats1 · 19/10/2022 21:32

I agree with your friends.

Watchingloosewomenatnight · 19/10/2022 21:34

@LoveMyCats1 Don't do it?

Would it help you to see the child differently/more positively if they were challenging? (Not mine, something one of my teacher friends mentioned)

Once in a while sounds lovely. More than once a week might be a bit tedious/time consuming.

VladmirsPoutine · 19/10/2022 21:53

What sort of things? I imagine anything a 4yr old can conjure up would get quite tedious after a couple of times. Some leaves stuck to a card?? Yes nice gesture but it will get quite tedious imo.

Seashor · 19/10/2022 21:54

I don’t want any of it thank you. It’s usually shite, glittery unicorns and to be absolutely honest I can’t build up any enthusiasm for it. Give it to the adoring grandparents!
However, if your child comes in and tells me they’ve read a chapter of their book or been on a walk and seen an ancient tree, I’ll be all over them like a rash!

Broke101 · 19/10/2022 21:57

So those here who teach and don't like this... what do you do? Can't you just pretend to be enthusiastic smile and say thank you and move on with your day. How is it tedious?

If you thought the things 4 year olds do are tedious you wouldn't be a Reception teacher.

liveforsummer · 19/10/2022 21:59

I don't think a 4 year old knows what sucking up is tbh. I'm a TA and think it's cute.

Passmethecrisps · 19/10/2022 21:59

It’s a lovely thing to do. If it is genuinely from your child then no human ever would be anything less than delighted.

this is a million times better than comparative gift buying at Christmas. I have a friend who once complained to me that her child had been told off “and I give her lovely things as well!”

enjoy your child’s innocence in sharing her adoration of her teacher so honestly

Passmethecrisps · 19/10/2022 22:01

Competitive. Not comparative

Agree hopefully the ones that hate the idea don't teach reception 😆

Mariposista · 19/10/2022 22:30

If you choose to work with Reception age children, you do not find these things tedious even when they are, because you know that the child brings them to you with love and admiration, and we would never say anything other than 'thank you so much, how lovely'.

Watchingloosewomenatnight · 19/10/2022 23:13

@Seashor Wow 😳
