To think what happened to Milli Vanilli is so sad

I was under 5 when this whole scandal happened so don't remember it at the time but till this day still play the track and absolutely love girl you know it's true.

I also have a crush on them (especially Fab 🤣)

But on a serious note it's so so sad what happened to these guys it breaks my heart - mainly because they could actually sing!

It's so bizarre they were not allowed to take over and start singing themselves as I'm convinced they could have had fame in their own right.

Was anyone perhaps a bit older to remember when all this happened?

I thought Ya Kid Kay sand ‘Ride on Time’ but then had a few songs in her own right!? If I’m remembering my Smash Hits articles correctly 🙈

Awrite · 18/10/2022 22:16

I used to sing 'Back to life, back to looality' without ever really thinking about what a looality' was.😂

SwedishEdith · 18/10/2022 22:17

Loleatta Holloway was the original singer sampled on the Black Box song.

I remember Milli Vanilli appearing on Wogan after the scandal broker and singing live to prove they could sing. It was awful, really painful to watch. Exploited by the music industry.

Bobby Farrell of Boney M died in St Petersburg on the same date Rasputin died.

Omg I didn't know the black box woman wasn't the real woman?!!! I remember that song too what the hell why did the industry keep doing this? Terrible 😢

Apparently the real woman was an older larger lady and therefore they felt she would not be as appealing nice bit of misogyny there

Aye, the lass singing it on TOTP was a slim wee thing. The lady singing it in real life was much bigger, I believe, which somehow makes sense when you think of the power of her voice!

MarmiteCoriander · 18/10/2022 22:17

Similar has happened in film history for decades. Marni Nixon provided the vocals for 100's of the famous leading ladies in Hollywood- without any mention in the credits that she was actually singing. I believe the rules now mean that a different singer needs to be mentioned in the credits.

I recall hearing about the Milli Vanilli scandal at the time, but have only understood it more as an adult.

chosenone · 18/10/2022 22:18

I’m mixing ‘Ride on Time’ up with ‘ Pump up the Jam’ Technotronic had a lip synching model then YKK was allowed to be the front woman

Keyansier · 18/10/2022 22:18

Also on a similar theme, it's obvious from listening to these demos that the original singers vocals were kept in parts of the released versions of these Rihanna songs:

Puppylucky · 18/10/2022 22:19

Unless I'm being really old or stupid isn't Ride on Time an early example of sampling? They just took a sample from a completely different track which was Loleatta Holloway's Love Sensation. You can tell from the vocal repeat. So nothing to do with people miscrediting vocals

Redhotchllisteppa · 18/10/2022 22:19

Jennifer Lopez didnt sing on some of her hit singles

Maybe I should have googled it’s not the M People singer (she never denies or confirmes) it was a lady called Loleatta

It was kind of both but the version that went public was heather small.

If you read the full story loleatta was sampled, but they didn’t proceed, as there was a legal dispute, I think over royalties,, so they re-recorded with heather small and that was what was released. If you listen to it it’s very clearly heather.

she hasn’t confirmed and neither has the studio as she did it for a straight one off payment as a favour as she was already planned to be huge by the studio. So it was done confidentially .

but yes loleatta was first, sampled, it was for a tiny fragment of the song and they then went to legal dispute, the studio said fuck it and brought small in and had her do it, and then they released. They then hired a model to lip sync as they didn’t want small associated with this, they had bigger plans, it wasn’t her launch plan.

AlphaAlpha · 18/10/2022 22:21

Heather Small has a very distinctive voice.
It is not HS singing Ride on time.
The singer is Loleatta Holloway.

A vast majority of early 90s euro dance tracks have an element of sampling.

Mariah Carey was a ghost vocalist on "Back to Life" before she had her own career.

Once you hear her in it, it's obvious:

Not true

LaChatte · 18/10/2022 22:22

Isn't the Frozen song similar, not the same person singing in the film as on the song released separately. Maybe I imagined that.

Understatement of the century 😂😂😂
"Play" is practically a full Christina Milian song although she's only credited as a backing vocalist.

It’s really not . I’m not going to sit and argue but it genuinely isn’t,

Yes it is.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 18/10/2022 22:24

Didn't something similar happen at the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony - where a very classically-pretty girl was on the stage but miming to the vocals of a more ordinary-looking girl?

Sorry to break it to you but Elsa is fictional 😘

You may have got two things mixed up: Disney often release a 'movie' version and a singer version (in the case of Frozen, it's Demi Lovato). But also, the songs in Disney films are often a bit different lyrically and sometimes in how they sound from how they are released on the soundtracks/radio versions (I don't know why).

Lapland123 · 18/10/2022 22:28

CheshireDing

why do you say A-ha did this? No they didn’t!

SwedishEdith · 18/10/2022 22:29

I suspect most people have heard the original version of Ride on Time as that's what was played on the radio.

Within a week of Small recording the vocal, Deconstruction withdrew the single and released a new version[7] on the Ride on Time Remix EP, which counted towards sales of the original song.[13] The edited track appeared on the EP as the "Massive Mix".[13] Radio stations continued to play the original version,[13] and it continued to appear on some versions of Dreamland and compilation albums.

AriettyHomily · 18/10/2022 22:30

We'll know I know it wasn't 'right on time'!

foxlover47 · 18/10/2022 22:31

@Awrite I used to love them and their puffball skirts ha ha
