Cost of living crisis - Christmas lights ???

Will there be any up this year?

Martin Lewis is going on about blackouts and using less energy between 4-10pm. Will there be fewer nodding reindeers and houses lit up this Christmas?

34p to have an oven on for an hour. The Christmas turkey will cost about £1 to cook... phew! Or shall we just go round to MILs!?

I have some LED icicles and LED coloured lights that go on our guttering.

Both sets are many years old. I shall have them on for a couple of hours each evening on a timer just like I always do.

I refuse to accept rationing of energy and blackouts in UK in 2022 so will just oretend it's not happening and enjoy my 10kwh a season on Christmas lights until it actually turns into third world country.

LittleStar22 · 26/10/2022 22:28

Same here!
Have them up year round in the back garden and will just put a few more up outside the front of the house/around the bushes in December.

LittleStar22 · 26/10/2022 22:29

That was in response to the PP who said they had solar lights!

I am surprised how many people don't know about Diwali.
It's in life in the uk test 😂 Should be general knowledge

I saw someone local to me put up lights the other day. I did think Diwali too.. except they now have a christmas tree in their window.

My lights will be going up. It
Feels
Like a competitive race to the bottom to see who can have most miserable Christmas.

I agree, my lights will be on inside and out. I may even buy more! They are leds, they take barely any electricity, people are so bloody miserable.

Great to know what the next public blaming and shaming is going to be. Yeah we should definitely judge those with Christmas lights on and tut at their wastefulness. Never mine the politicians, the energy companies, the big corporations that have got us into these dire straits. FFS

I have always judged those who cover their houses with these lights and will continue to do so...

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 26/10/2022 22:55

@Applesandcarrots I agree. Loads of people asking why there were so many fireworks last night 'it's not November 5th' 😂

It isn’t about the cost of running them it’s about the fact that we may well be at the point of energy rationing by then, leaving to blackouts. If we have limited electricity then we should be cutting back everywhere and not running pointless things like Christmas lights

So can those of us with solar keep our lights in your ideal world? What about those charging electric cars when they could be using petrol. A few LED Xmas lights use next to no electric, it should be those using dish washers and electric cars you are after. the lights for the entire seasons use less electric than charging his car once.

AlwaysLatte · 26/10/2022 23:12

We don't go mad, just a few strings of fairy lights in the trees in our front garden and a small tree in our front porch with a string of lights on, so we'll do that again this year.

It isn't about my ideal world. My ideal world wouldn't be one where we are facing blackouts. They are clearly a real risk since the energy companies are now starting to announce their plans to pay households to reduce their power usage during peak hours. They wouldn't be doing that unless the risk was significant.

Applesandcarrots · 27/10/2022 09:46

Well we can all just turn lights on at 7pm after the peak 😁
Happy to help

whiteonesugar · 27/10/2022 09:49

I have battery powered lights out front, and no-one will be telling me not to put my christmas tree lights on!!

Well they probably will be telling you that. It’s on you whether you listen.

Quveas · 27/10/2022 12:13

I don't want to derail the discussion, but I doubt the cost of Christmas lights will deter too many people - around here the yobs still seem to have far too much money to waste based on the bloody fireworks going off everywhere. It's already been two weeks nearly now, and not because of Diwali.

Northernlurker · 27/10/2022 15:39

Ffs! This thread is making me want to illuminate my front garden, usually have a few lights above the garage. Might go larger now!
