My Next Door Neighbor

I know he was probably joking, but my Next Door Neighbor Jeff, was collecting up leaves in his garden and saw me hanging out the washing and shouted across the fence, “it’s a hard life, a man’s work is never done!” I laughed of course but felt incredibly irritated by the joke not least because hanging out the washing isn’t my only household chore - AIBU? What irritates you?

One thing that pisses me off, when you're painting your fence, mowing the lawn, weeding the flowerbeds, trimming the bushes, etc; some 'thinks he's so funny' MAN comes past EVERY FUCKING TIME, thinking he is 'oh so original' and says 'you can come and do mine next.'

Every. Fucking. TIME. Hmm

And one thing that made me fucking furious ... last summer a man from down the road, walked past as DH was sunbathing and I was planting flowers. He said to DH, 'what's she doing the gardening for? Shouldn't she be in the kitchen?' I was like Hmm and said 'women can do gardening too you know!' DH said 'she loves gardening. It's her favourite hobby.' He just grunted and shuffled off. Apparently in HIS world, women are chained to the kitchen sink, and should NEVER think about doing MANS JOBS! Rude bastard.

I don't get that 'say one for me while you're down there...'

Do you mean when you're on your knees, a man says 'while you're down there...' (Hinting you can give him a blowjob?)

No they mean prayers. I’m in Scotland and it’s still quite sectarian in a lot of Scotland. While I’m kneeling they say “say one for me while you’re down there” meaning say a prayer for them. And it’s actually usually old chapel going women who say it.

It annoys me because I’m not religious despite being raised catholic and I despise the sectarian bullshit that goes with it. The connotations are us catholics say prayers on our knees on hassocks while Presbyterian or free church don’t

Oh I do apologise. Blush I didn't realise.

HighlandPony · 18/10/2022 21:48

@WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps

its fine. You can see why it’s annoying though. I don’t want my kids brought up with this religious sectarian mess but I’m fighting a losing battle

What irritates me? People who can’t spell neighbour.

Every single American irritates you? Because of your own ignorance?
Weird.

WHAT?
I'm a Glaswegian, and this phrase is used all over the UK and has no sectarian meaning.
For sure there are lots of sectarian 'jibes', thought I'd heard them all, but that's not one of them.

Nymeria6 · 18/10/2022 22:00

Eh?

StoneofDestiny · 18/10/2022 22:00

Protestant traditionalists also have taken up the cause, demanding that they be allowed to kneel in church if they choose. Some Methodist and Presbyterian congregations have added "kneelers" in pews, quoting biblical texts that speak of the importance of presenting oneself humbly before God

Poor Jeff.

Praying. On your knees, say a prayer for me. Get your mind out of the gutter :)

WhatIsThisPlease · 18/10/2022 22:06

I like Jeff.

Three preachers sat discussing the best positions for prayer while a telephone repairman worked nearby.

“Kneeling is definitely best,” claimed one.

“No,” another contended. “I get the best results standing with my hands outstretched to Heaven.”

“You’re both wrong,” the third insisted. “The most effective prayer position is lying prostrate, face down on the floor.”

The repairman could contain himself no longer. “Hey, fellas, ” he interrupted, “the best prayin’ I ever did was hangin’ upside down from a telephone pole.”

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 18/10/2022 22:07

It is a saying. You should have replied.
"A man may work from sun to sun, but a woman's work is never done"

Cas112 · 18/10/2022 22:09

I don't get it? What's the issue?

I mowed the lawn as well as two loads of washing on the line. Its been lovely. I think the latest I've ever mowed the lawn was 29th October ten years ago.

I was raised to kneel in church, and also to kneel next to bed for nightly prayers. C of E, fifty years ago.
