During the Women's Euros I registered my interest in getting involved in women's football via an advert on Facebook. A chap called to explain he was part of an organisation who were encouraging more interest/participation in women's football and would I be interested. I explained that I haven't played football since I was 10 but have been inspired by recent events to give it a go and would be happy to play for fun with other like minded people.

Fast forward to today and he's sent me a message saying he's generated enough interest to form a team and would I be available to play in a game tomorrow night. (The field is literally next to my house!) If it goes well then he'd like to set up an actual team.

I'm 40 but fairly fit (I run and strength train) but obviously I'll be no match for 20 year olds! I have no idea who else will be on the team. I thought we'd have a bit of training first before playing a game. I don't even know if I can play... is this completely mad? I've never played team sports before (apart from netball at school).

Has anyone experience of adult amateur football?

YANBU - give it a go
YABU - you will either embarrass or injure yourself not to memtion let down an entire team of genuine football enthusiasts

Ooh go for it, don't second guess yourself life's too short! Enjoy.

I'd go for the first one to see what it's like, then you can decide, could be really fun!

tattychicken · 18/10/2022 11:19

Definitely go. I'm sure it will be low key as it's a first game. If you don't go you'll be annoyed with yourself and wonder what it would have been like. Go and find out!

LetsGoDoDoDo · 18/10/2022 11:41

Thank you for the encouragement ☺️

I'm quite nervous that I'll make a total fool of myself but I suppose I could give it a go. I'll have to pop out at lunch to pick up some football boots 😂

I've now just been asked what position I play... I feel like such a fraud! I was hoping they'd tell me!

What's the easiest position? Defence?

Be honest!! Say you have no idea but are keen to learn how to play.

Ha this adorable. Sorry if that sounds patronising but, as a huge football fan, I bloody love that you're doing this. I'd try defence first if you strength train but maybe give midfield a try too. I don't think there's anything wrong with telling him you don't know though. Good luck!

Oh and my local football team have 34 women's teams of various abilities, sizes and ages. My almost 16 year old trains with them (not old enough to play yet) and there are some women in their 40s who train with her

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 18/10/2022 12:31

*4 women's teams not 34!

Arenanewbie · 18/10/2022 12:34

I think doing a game is the best way to see the level of everyone. Try it, it’s normal for any club to lose/ gain members after first few sessions.
Try before you buy 🙂

YANBU. I imagine everyone else will have similar feelings and it's something you want to do. So what if you're terrible at it?
