To think it doesn’t feel like Autumn?

Not sure about where you are, but here it’s been consistently 17/18 degrees pretty much everyday in October. Today it’s 18 degrees again, I’ve still got the fan on at night as my room is still 20/21 degrees every evening.

We haven’t put the log burner on once yet and we’re mid October, the heating has clicked on a couple of times in the last week or so first thing in the morning and later evening but that’s about it.

Obviously with the price of heating this winter it’s a good thing, but I do love Autumn and it just doesn’t feel very autumnal to me. Most of the trees round here still have all their leaves, the trees in our garden still have all their leaves, the oak tree is starting to golden but still hasn’t dropped many, usually the grass is full of leaves by now.

After a never ending scorching summer, I’ve been looking forward to a hot chocolate in front of the fire and wearing my new winter coat…neither will be happening for a while looking at the temperatures for the next 10 days.

Anyone else think we’re having an unusually warm October?

You clearly don't live in Northern England then...

Quite! Talk about blustery!

ofwarren · 17/10/2022 12:06

Very autumnal here in the North West of England.
All the trees are changing colour now and dropping leaves.
The weather is cool but bright. My DS wore gloves and hat this morning.

Come to Scotland. It was 4° when I dropped the kids off at school and nursery last week.

House was 14° at teatime. Had to have the heating on.

Thesearmsofmine · 17/10/2022 12:10

Very Autumnal feeling here today. Bright and sunny with blustery winds so not warm! Plenty of leaves on the ground. Perfect for drying washing though.

Leakingroofagain · 17/10/2022 12:14

We are very mild. They said on the radio this morning we are also about to get some hot plume up from Africa which will put us at over 20 degrees. It worries me in terms of climate change but it's good this year that we haven't needed any heating yet, don't have to run the bathroom fan as we can still leave the window open all day etc. Cutting the grass still is annoying though!

ethelredonagoodday · 17/10/2022 12:17

We've had a few chilly days here (Yorkshire).

OneDayAtATimePlease · 17/10/2022 12:17

YANBU this time last year I went on a walk and took photos of the glorious autumnal colours in the nature reserve and wearing a jumper was necessary even though it was a sunny day.

Did the same walk on the weekend and it was mostly green. A few leaves have started shedding and some of the undergrowth is dying back but it's not autumnal, I was also roasting hot in my thin hoodie (more T shirt style fabric than jumper).

According to my mother and grandmother's folklore this means we're in for a colder winter. I think it's just more evidence that climate change is shifting what we can expect from each season and the planet is fucked. My matriarchs opinions are probably more favoured than mine.

Maireas · 17/10/2022 12:19

Well, none of the leaves are still green here.
I think people forget that their part of the UK may be different from other parts.

BackOnTheBandWagon · 17/10/2022 12:22

I guess it's still fairly mild in my corner of the West Country, but it definitely feels like autumn - blustery, showers, and really chilly mornings and evenings, even if the days do warm up. Plus the leaves are red-orange-yellow-green-golden-brown. My favourite time of year Smile

Maireas · 17/10/2022 12:23

My favourite time of year, too!
All the trees are shades of brown and gold, the air is fresh, it's cool and lovely!

My comparison is literally my area for the exact same time of year.

I'm not under the illusion that further north may have entered autumn properly, but in direct comparison it's late arriving here.

Oddly enough the OP is probably posting from the same perspective, their area is noticeably less "autumn like" than to be expected.

Justwanttobebythesea · 17/10/2022 12:29

October is always warmer than I remember and March is always colder!

CookPassBabtridge · 17/10/2022 12:34

Good I've been freezing for the last month in Yorkshire. Loving it though 🖤

CookPassBabtridge · 17/10/2022 12:35

God*

BogRollBOGOF · 17/10/2022 12:40

It feels very much like autumn to me. The autumn colour is beautiful, the ground is thick with acorns, conkers and other fruits/ seeds. While the sunshine is warm, the breeze is fresh and the mornings/ evenings are cool. The evenings are begining to drag out. Leaves are fluttering off and at the pleasantly crunchy stage.

This time of year stays milder while there is still heat in the oceans. The temperatures of inland water are decreasing as usual and wetsuit season has begun.

I'm enjoying it before it all turns to grim, grey mush and darkness. There's already too many monotonous months of that!

sashagabadon · 17/10/2022 12:44

it's lovely though - we've had a fantastic autumn weather wise in London - mostly sunny and lovely - perfect Autumn weather in my opinion. What would be better? October can be wet and windy and all the lovely leaves fall off the Trees in one go. I'm loving it - and no need to turn on heating either yet for me so good for my finances too!

Odd, isn't it?
"It doesn't feel like autumn"
"Yes, it does!"
Different parts of the UK.
I love autumn 😊

Propagandalf · 17/10/2022 13:33

Don't blame the weather on the weather man/lady.

Greta Thunberg dictates what the weather is.

fernz · 17/10/2022 13:39

It's very damp all the time and that makes it feel autumnal. My house is about 17C in the evenings so not exactly warm.

romany4 · 17/10/2022 13:43

ilovesooty · 17/10/2022 12:00

Exactly. It's 13 degrees here.

I'm sure the OP will be able to have her hot chocolate in front of her fire and wear her winter coat in due course.

Definitely. I was freezing my tits off this morning taking my baby grandson to nursery...

Hobbesmanc · 17/10/2022 14:35

I'm a Halloween baby and I've had birthday parties when its been t shirt outside weather. Its deffo mild this year but the tree foliage is noticeably stunning. Had to put the leckie blanket on though this weekend - North West here

CuriousCatfish · 17/10/2022 14:38

It's quite mild today, but my garden is covered in fallen leaves so it very much looks like Autumn.

bonzaitree · 17/10/2022 14:42

Thanking my lucky stars it is mild outside given the bills.

Very mild- I was sat outside with no coat on yesterday.

KarenOLantern · 17/10/2022 14:56

Funny enough, I was just saying to my DH last week how I feel like autumn this year has felt way more autumnal than previous years, when summer seemed to drag itself out longer than it ought to have done.

There's been sunshine, yes, but that sort of wan chilly sunshine accompanied by lots of wind and lovely golden leaves. I've already had a few hot chocolates and ovaltines.

girlfrien · 17/10/2022 14:56

its autumn its dark early and the sunshine is fading away now sadly.
