To think I'm probably past the time for the antivirals to make much difference

Have managed to avoid covid since it first started, then last weekend felt like I had been hit by a bus, really high fever, aches and pains and generally felt like I had the flu.

Took a couple of tests over the weekend and they were negative so after spending the first day in bed I just got up and carried on with work etc. Have felt really crap all week, still just head cold type symptoms but just assumed I'd picked up a bad cold. Then last night my fever returned with a vengeance, I slept in 3 jumpers and was still shivering like crazy despite my temp being over 39. My chest had also gone really tight and I've got an awful cough.

Took another test this morning and it's positive. I have severe asthma so I had a letter last winter that said if I test positive I need to be given the antiviral medication. Just rang and spoke to 111 who said they will get someone to call me with the prescription soon. However I'm just wondering if it will actually help if I'm already 10 days in?

Yes. Don't bother. Waste of time

Ignore the fact that medical professionals are telling you the opposite of some random on the internet

Are you always this sarcastic. Must be a sad life.

Fair enough

No sarcasm this time

Do what the medical professionals tell you

I was told the antivirals would have to be taken within the first 5 days so they may not help but they won't prescribe them to you if you aren't eligible so there may be other/newer meds that are suitable for taking after a longer time.

I hope you feel better soon!

PopcornChewingGum · 16/10/2022 08:38

OP unlike the previous poster I'm not one to blindly follow medical advice , especially if it was given months ago with no knowledge of your specific, current circumstances. So I think the question you're asking is valid.

From my limited and ignorant understanding - I am NOT a medical profession - between days 7-10 are often the most dangerous for Covid sufferers. If you are on day 10 and your symptoms have recurred, or not abated, I wouldn't assume the worst is behind you. If you can't get your lungs and oxygen saturation checked by a doctor, then I would take the anti virals as a precaution, even and especially at this late stage.

Hope you feel better - good luck.

Sorry, I just read your post again. If your fever has returned with a vengeance you're getting worse, not better. I'd take the medication

Thank you, that's what I had read on the nhs website that they needed to be taken as soon as the symptoms started so I wasn't sure. Just had a call back from the pharmacist and he said he needs to get the coronavirus team to call me back so hopefully they will be able to explain it all. They're also getting a dr to call me back to check my asthma medication and if they need to change my doses so hopefully that will help too

I recently went through this as I’m immunosupressed and had this letter too.
When the CDMU called me on day 3 and I was assessed over the phone told anti virals were prescribed to those with breathing difficulties or shortness of breath (which I didn’t have), but to call back if I got worse within 7 days.
As you have breathing difficulties - I’d still pursue it in case they can stop it from worsening.

Thanks for your post, I'm just waiting for the Dr to call me back now to see if I need to be seen.

It is feasible that you had a different virus last weekend and now you have COVID. I would follow the medical advice and take the medicines.

gogohmm · 16/10/2022 08:43

It's quite possible you have had two separate viruses remember, the first wasn't covid, now you have it, trust whatever the drs suggest

octonautsmom · 16/10/2022 08:45

@gogohmm @UniversalTruth yes that's what Im now wondering if it was something different last week and now I've got covid.

Chobbers · 16/10/2022 08:46

Had this too - the doctor assessing me said that the drugs were expensive and they needed to be sure that they’d be reaching patients who would benefit from them.
Hope you feel better soon.

My dad was classed as ECV and the chaos of the NHS meant he couldn't get them in time. By the time he was offered them it was too late and he was already hospitalised, shambles. Luckily he recovered
